Israel-Lebanon: Israeli military clears itself of cluster bomb misuse in Lebanon

Report
IRIN
JERUSALEM, 28 December 2007 (IRIN) - Israel's military advocate-general, Brig-Gen Avihai Mendelblit, has said the military's use of cluster munitions during the conflict in Lebanon in 2006 was in accordance with international humanitarian law. Human rights groups and the UN had previously condemned the use of the bombs.

In a statement issued on 24 December, the Israeli military said it used cluster munitions to fight Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia militant group, which had "heavily camouflaged" its launching sites for firing rockets at Israel.

Israeli cluster bomb kills Lebanese father: police

TYRE, Lebanon, Dec 20, 2007 (AFP) - A Lebanese father of three was killed by a cluster bomb dropped by Israeli forces during last year's war in Lebanon, police said on Thursday.

Mohamed Hamzi, 33, was killed in the village of Zebqine near the southern port city of Tyre when a cluster bomb exploded as he was gathering wood to heat his home, police said.

The munitions dropped by Israel during its devastating air war against Lebanon last year included at least a million cluster bomblets, according to the United Nations.

UNICEF creates a safe haven to help refugee children in north Lebanon

By Eliane Asmar

NAHR EL BARED, Lebanon, 17 December 2007 - Since May, when conflicts between the Lebanese military and Fateh el Islam militants began, life for children in the Palestinian refugee camp here has been a mixture of fear and disillusionment.

Of the more than 6,500 families who fled the camp, over 1,000 have now returned, bringing with them 650 children aged 12 and under.

Although local and international relief agencies have been providing essential services in the camp, what children seem to miss most is the small sense of security that they once felt in
