Four dead as clashes rage in Lebanon's Tripoli

TRIPOLI, Lebanon, May 22, 2013 (AFP) - At least four people have been killed in clashes in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, a security source told AFP, as fighting raged into a fourth day on Wednesday.

The source also reported that 35 people were wounded in the fighting between Sunni and Alawite residents of the flashpoint town on Tuesday.

The dead included two Sunni residents of the Bab el-Tebbaneh district, a third Sunni from elsewhere in the city, and an Alawite resident of the Jabal Mohsen neighbourhood, the source said.

Finland announces additional EUR 1.5 million to UNRWA

During his visit to Gaza today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Finland Dr. Erkki Tuomioja announced an additional EUR 1.5 million to the General Fund of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This funding will support UNRWA’s regular programme to Palestine refugees living in the occupied Palestinian territory, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.

Two dead, 27 hurt as clashes rage in Lebanon's Tripoli

Beirut, May 21, 2013 (AFP) - At least two people were killed and 27 wounded in running clashes in the flashpoint northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Tuesday, a security source told AFP.

The source said the two killed were a 70-year-old man and a 38-year-old man, both from the Sunni Muslim neighbourhood of Bab el-Tebanneh.

At least 27 others were injured in the clashes, including three who were in serious condition, the source said.

TOMS shoes for kids in Lebanon refugee camps

At one elementary school in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, teacher Fakhrieh Al Zaabouti was saddened when a 7-year-old child arrived to school in tears. “His left shoe was torn apart and he was so upset.” But, his tears soon turned to joy when he received his new pair of TOMS Shoes.

This is ANERA’s first delivery of TOMS Shoes in Lebanon.

Oxfam warns of health risks to Syria refugees as summer approaches

With temperatures set to soar up to 104ºF (40˚C) in the coming weeks, international agency Oxfam has warned that the warmer weather will increase health-related risks for Syrian refugees. The aid agency says the most vulnerable, such as the elderly, women and young children, are already facing serious health risks due to a lack of shelter, water and basic sanitation.

Clashes kill two in Lebanon's Tripoli: security source

BEIRUT, May 19, 2013 (AFP) - At least two people were killed and six others wounded in running gun battles in the flashpoint northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, a security source told AFP on Sunday.

The source identified the dead as 22-year-old Mohammed Yussef, from the Alawite Jabal Mohsen area, and a 13-year-old boy from the neighbouring Sunni area of Bab el-Tebbaneh.

One person was wounded in Jabal Mohsen and five others were wounded in Bab el-Tebbaneh, the source said.

Syrian forces storm rebel bastion of Qusayr

DAMASCUS, May 20, 2013 (AFP) - Syrian troops backed by Lebanon's Hezbollah have entered Qusayr, a strategic rebel stronghold linking Damascus to the coast, a day after President Bashar al-Assad insisted he would not step aside.

The advance came Sunday as Assad's opponents warned his regime's "barbaric and destructive" assault on the town could torpedo US-Russian attempts to organise a conference on ending more than two years of bloodshed.

Education in Lebanon

Lebanon has made significant strides in improving education in recent years, but much remains to be done.

A signatory of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, Lebanon still needs to ensure that education be free, available and accessible for all, and that drop-out rates be cut from their currently very high levels.
