Urgent action needed to dodge Syria spillover: EU

GENEVA, May 22, 2013 (AFP) - Urgent action is needed to protect countries bordering Syria from spillover from the spiralling civil war there, the EU's aid chief said Wednesday.

"We cannot turn the clock back on Syria, on the tragedy that has happened there, but we still might be able to protect against the flares going into the neighbourhood," humanitarian aid commissioner Kristalina Georgieva told reporters in Geneva.

Around 3,400 Palestine refugee children from Syria now continuing their education in UNRWA schools in Lebanon received school uniforms, school bags and clothing vouchers from UNICEF.

“Education is a priority for both UNRWA and the Palestine refugee community and this will remain so, despite the ongoing humanitarian crisis of Palestine refugees from Syria”, said Deputy Director of UNRWA Affairs in Lebanon Mr. Roger Davies. Four dead as clashes rage in Lebanon's Tripoli

TRIPOLI, Lebanon, May 22, 2013 (AFP) - At least four people have been killed in clashes in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, a security source told AFP, as fighting raged into a fourth day on Wednesday.

The source also reported that 35 people were wounded in the fighting between Sunni and Alawite residents of the flashpoint town on Tuesday.

The dead included two Sunni residents of the Bab el-Tebbaneh district, a third Sunni from elsewhere in the city, and an Alawite resident of the Jabal Mohsen neighbourhood, the source said.

BEYROUTH, 21 mai 2013 (AFP) - Au moins quatre personnes ont été tuées et 35 blessées mardi à Tripoli, la grande ville du nord du Liban, dans des heurts entre des partisans et opposants au président syrien Bachar al-Assad, a indiqué à l'AFP une source de sécurité.

Figurent parmi les personnes tuées deux hommes, dont un âgé de 70 ans, originaires du quartier sunnite de Bab el-Tebanneh qui soutient la rébellion syrienne, un sunnite d'un autre quartier et un habitant du quartier alaouite de Jabal Mohsen, favorable à Damas.

Finland announces additional EUR 1.5 million to UNRWA

During his visit to Gaza today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Finland Dr. Erkki Tuomioja announced an additional EUR 1.5 million to the General Fund of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This funding will support UNRWA’s regular programme to Palestine refugees living in the occupied Palestinian territory, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.

Two dead, 27 hurt as clashes rage in Lebanon's Tripoli

Beirut, May 21, 2013 (AFP) - At least two people were killed and 27 wounded in running clashes in the flashpoint northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Tuesday, a security source told AFP.

The source said the two killed were a 70-year-old man and a 38-year-old man, both from the Sunni Muslim neighbourhood of Bab el-Tebanneh.

At least 27 others were injured in the clashes, including three who were in serious condition, the source said.

TOMS shoes for kids in Lebanon refugee camps

At one elementary school in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, teacher Fakhrieh Al Zaabouti was saddened when a 7-year-old child arrived to school in tears. “His left shoe was torn apart and he was so upset.” But, his tears soon turned to joy when he received his new pair of TOMS Shoes.

This is ANERA’s first delivery of TOMS Shoes in Lebanon.

BEYROUTH, 19 mai 2013 (AFP) - Au moins deux personnes ont été tuées et six autres blessées à Tripoli, la grande ville du nord du Liban, au cours de heurts confessionnels liés au conflit en Syrie voisine, a rapporté dimanche une source de sécurité à l'AFP.

Les deux morts sont un habitant de 22 ans du quartier alaouite de Jabal Mohsen, et un adolescent de 13 ans originaire du quartier sunnite rival de Bab el-Tebbaneh. En outre, une personne a été blessée à Jabal Mohsen et cinq autres à Bab el-Tebbaneh.

Oxfam warns of health risks to Syria refugees as summer approaches

With temperatures set to soar up to 104ºF (40˚C) in the coming weeks, international agency Oxfam has warned that the warmer weather will increase health-related risks for Syrian refugees. The aid agency says the most vulnerable, such as the elderly, women and young children, are already facing serious health risks due to a lack of shelter, water and basic sanitation.

Clashes kill two in Lebanon's Tripoli: security source

BEIRUT, May 19, 2013 (AFP) - At least two people were killed and six others wounded in running gun battles in the flashpoint northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, a security source told AFP on Sunday.

The source identified the dead as 22-year-old Mohammed Yussef, from the Alawite Jabal Mohsen area, and a 13-year-old boy from the neighbouring Sunni area of Bab el-Tebbaneh.

One person was wounded in Jabal Mohsen and five others were wounded in Bab el-Tebbaneh, the source said.

Syrian forces storm rebel bastion of Qusayr

DAMASCUS, May 20, 2013 (AFP) - Syrian troops backed by Lebanon's Hezbollah have entered Qusayr, a strategic rebel stronghold linking Damascus to the coast, a day after President Bashar al-Assad insisted he would not step aside.

The advance came Sunday as Assad's opponents warned his regime's "barbaric and destructive" assault on the town could torpedo US-Russian attempts to organise a conference on ending more than two years of bloodshed.

Khaled, his wife and three children fled Syria’s Homs five months ago when their home was hit by a rocket. He and his family were inside the building at the time. They survived and escaped across the border but Khaled says the children still have nightmares. They are now living in a ShelterBox tent in Akroum, just two kilometres from the border.

‘God only knows where we would be living if we didn’t have the ShelterBox tent,’ said Khaled.
