GENEVA, 10 November 2011 – Eighteen countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have agreed to tighten up on school safety while also integrating disaster risk reduction into the school curriculum, following high-level talks on education in Panama City.

Hurricane Irene traverses Caribbean: localised damage but no major losses

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, August 28, 2011 – The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) has announced that, while Hurricane Irene resulted in registered losses in six of its member countries (Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas, Haiti, St. Kitts & Nevis and the Turks & Caicos Islands), none of the policies of these countries were triggered. Of these territories, the highest losses were determined for the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands. None of the other four countries was impacted by more than lower Tropical Storm-force winds (under 50mph).

Situation Report #2 Tropical Depression Harvey leaves Belize as Tropical Storm Irene passes south of the Lesser Antilles and threatens Haiti (as of Sunday August 21, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. EST)

Message: Tropical Storm Harvey has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression as it leaves Belize and moves across southern Yucatan. Tropical Storm Irene passes south of Saint Kitts and Nevis, threatens the Lesser Antilles as it moves towards Haiti (Hispaniola).

En alerta el Caribe por Tormenta tropical Emily

La tormenta tropical Emily mantiene este martes en estado de alerta a las islas del Caribe, donde comienzan a sentirse las fuertes lluvias, las ráfagas y las inundaciones costeras.

El Centro Nacional de Huracanas de Estados Unidos (CNH) llamó a los países del área a mantenerse atentos, pues está previsto que el ciclón aumente su intensidad en las próximas 24 horas, reporta Prensa Latina.

De acuerdo con el meteorólogo Javier Serrano, Emily tiene vientos máximos sostenidos de 65 kilómetros por hora y se espera que aumente hasta los 97 entre este martes y el miércoles.

Santiago de Chile, 11 de marzo de 2011 - Responder ante desastres naturales y prevenir sus efectos es una labor que tendrá cada vez mayor importancia para América Latina y el Caribe, dado el contexto global de cambio climático, que puede aumentar y volver más violentos los eventos climáticos extremos.
