Caribbean Hurricane Season OCHA Situation Report No. 24

This situation report is based on information received from, the UN Emergency Technical Team (UNETT) in the affected countries, the Regional Office in Panama and the National Hurricane Centre.

HIGHLIGHTS

- The Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes visited Haiti on 23 and 24 October. He called for continued efforts from the humanitarian community and appealed for donors to sustain their generosity.

- The situation in Gonaives and other affected areas in Haiti remain difficult in particular with regards to shelter and food security.

Caribbean Hurricane Season OCHA Situation Report No. 23

This situation report covers the effects of storms and Hurricanes "Gustav", "Ike" and "Omar" in the Caribbean.

HIGHLIGHTS

Track and windspeed of Intense hurricane Omar (as of 16 Oct 2008)

Intense hurricane Omar struck the Virgin Islands as a hurricane at about 01:00 GMT on 16 October. Data supplied by the US National Hurricane Center suggest that the point of landfall was near 16.9 N, 65.0 W. Omar brought 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 148 km/h (92 mph). Wind gusts in the area may have been considerably higher.

According to the Saffir-Simpson damage scale the potential property damage and flooding from a storm of Omar's strength (category 1) at landfall includes:

- Storm surge generally 1.2-1.5 metres (4-5 feet) above normal.

Hurricane Omar impacts five CDERA participating states

Bridgetown, Barbados October 16, 2008 (CDERA)- Late yesterday, October 15, into this morning Thursday, October 16, 2008, Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands(BVI), Montserrat, Saint Kitts & Nevis and were impacted by a Category Three Hurricane Omar.

At 11:00am AST today, the centre of Hurricane Omar was situated at latitude 20.2 north, longitude 61.3 west, or about 180 miles (290 km) north east of the Northern Leeward Islands. All warnings for St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat and BVI have been discontinued.

This bulletin is being issued for information only. Hurricane Omar formed on 16 October causing heavy rain and flooding in several Caribbean Islands including Antigua, St. Kitts, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and the Netherlands Antilles.

The affected Overseas branches and National Societies, with the support of the Federation, have determined that external assistance is not required, and is therefore not seeking funding or other assistance from donors at this time.
