Caribbean: Commission adopts €2.5 million for disaster preparedness

The European Commission has approved a €2.5 million Action Plan to help vulnerable groups in the Caribbean prepare for and respond to natural disasters. The decision will support disaster preparedness initiatives and response mechanisms. Funds will be allocated to international agencies operating in the region, via the European Commission's Humanitarian Office, ECHO, under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson. The Disaster/Situation: Hurricane Lenny, which struck on 17 November 1999, affected most particularly the islands of Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, St. Lucia, Dominica, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Anguilla and Saint Martin.
