The context
Plans of action are being implemented in all five of the Caribbean countries (Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Eastern Caribbean islands of Antigua and St. Kitts) where the International Federation is supporting the National Societies relief operations in response to Hurricane Georges. In order to provide support to the National Societies of the affected countries, the International Federation launched an Appeal on 2 October for CHF 10,221,000 to assist 272,500 beneficiaries for six months, including the rehabilitation of 14,500 homes. Hurricane Georges: European Commission clears humanitarian aid worth ECU 2.8 million

Brussels, 30 November 1998 - The European Commission has cleared humanitarian aid worth ECU 2.8 million for victims of Hurricane Georges in the Caribbean. The aid, managed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO), will enable non-governmental organisations to carry out a programme of emergency aid over the next six months. BHR/OFDA assessment activities have ended in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the eastern Caribbean, and recommendations have been reviewed for additional disaster assistance. Impact situation report #10 - Hurricane Georges

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Hurricane Georges left a trail of damage in some of the Leeward Islands as it passed over the islands of the Northeastern Caribbean on September 20 - 21, 1998. Georges sustained maximum winds of 115 mph with higher gusts of up 150 mph. The hurricane adversely affected two Participating States while only causing minor damages in some others. The affected Participating States are now in the recovery/rehabilitation process.

By a unanimous action on Monday, the General Assembly urged all States to assist the Caribbean countries that have suffered the destruction of hurricane Georges.

Over one million affected in Caribbean by Hurricane Georges

At least 370 people lost their lives and several hundred thousand are homeless after Hurricane Georges hit Antigua, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, St. Kitts and other Caribbean nations last week.
