Summary

Hurricane Lenny struck the small island states of the Eastern Caribbean in mid-November. It moved in an atypical west to east pattern, starting at the northern coast of Venezuela and continuing on a east-northeasterly path through the northern Lesser Antilles.

In three days Hurricane Lenny developed winds of up to 240 kph, almost becoming a category 5 hurricane. On 17 November, the hurricane approached the Leeward islands, destroying houses, flooding

The on-going regional Hurricane Georges operation continued to dominate activities, sometimes at the expense of others. The start of the rehabilitation programme was slightly delayed because of changing needs. Other major events were the Inter-American Conference and the change process in the Dominican Republic. The Community Based Disaster Preparedness Programme moved forward and assessment visits were made to four National Societies.

Summary

José, a category 2 hurricane, moved over the Northern Leeward Islands on 19 - 21 October with intense winds of 160 km, causing widespread wind and flood damage in Antigua and Barbuda. The impact in St. Kitts and Nevis, was less severe as the winds passed to the north of these islands.

The International Federation launched a Preliminary Appeal on 23 September for CHF 2,400,000 to provide immediate relief assistance to victims of Hurricane Georges. This Appeal replaces the Preliminary Appeal. Commencing on September 20, Hurricane Georges ripped through the Caribbean with intense winds at times approaching speeds of 150 mph, and after six days left more than 300 people dead and nearly 300,000
