Natural hazards such as droughts, earthquakes, floods, and wildfires affect a range of countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia (EMCA). Moreover, protracted conflict and limited governmental disaster management capacity in many EMCA countries compound the risks associated with natural disasters.

31.7% of Kyrgyz population living in absolute poverty

BISHKEK [ACTED News] - A World Bank study on the profile and dynamics of poverty in Kyrgyzstan has highlighted that 1.7 million people in the country were living below the poverty line in 2009, translating to 31.7% of the population. The report finds that poverty is mainly rural and sectoral, as in other agriculture-based economies, and increases in high altitude mountainous areas. Provinces with the highest poverty rates are Issyk-Kul, Narryn, and Osh.

From transitional shelters to permanent homes

484 crisis-affected families in southern Kyrgyzstan to get new houses.

After building transitional shelters for families whose houses were burnt during the June 2010 crisis in southern Kyrgyzstan, ACTED is continuing its shelter project by constructing permanent homes for 484 affected families. The project is soon to end, and some families are getting ready to move in to their new homes where they can rebuild their lives.

UN human rights chief urges judges in Kyrgyzstan to respect defendants’ civil rights

GENEVA (22 December 2011) – United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Thursday expressed deep regret that the Kyrgyz Supreme Court on 20 December upheld the conviction and life sentence of human rights defender Azimjan Askarov, despite his reported torture in detention and serious violations of his right to a fair trial.

Emergency food-distributions for 30,000 households

OSH [ACTED News] - The food security situation of vulnerable households in southern Kyrgyzstan and the remote mountainous part of northern Kyrgyzstan has worsened recently due to higher food prices, poor climatic conditions and the ongoing effects of the violent events in 2010. These factors continue to exacerbate chronic drivers of food insecurity such as poverty and agricultural constraints.
