OCHA ROMENACA QUARTERLY REGIONAL HUMANITARIAN FUNDING UPDATE - 4th Quarter October - December 2010

Main Findings

Countries in the MENACA region gave US$400 million in humanitarian aid in 2010, as reported to OCHA's Financial Tracking Service.

At the end of 2010 , humanitarian appeals in the MENACA region were 59 per cent funded.

Total CERF funding to the MENACA region reached $93 million in 2010. In turn, countries in the region donated less than $1 million to the CERF pooled fund mechanism.

WFP Spends $6 Million in 2010, Supporting Kyrgyzstan Markets and Buying Food

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said Thursday it spent nearly $6 million in the Kyrgyz Republic to deliver assistance to the country's most vulnerable people in 2010.

BISHKEK - This is the largest amount ever spent by WFP in a single year in the Kyrgyz Republic and reflects the extent of the operations, including buying food and leasing transport, which were required to respond to the needs of those affected by the crisis in April as well as the impact it had on markets and livelihoods.

New Year Brings New Fears In Kyrgyzstan's Troubled City Of Osh

There will be no New Year's fireworks in Osh this year. They have been banned in the southern Kyrgyz city, along with parties in restaurants, bars, and all other public places over the winter holiday season.

Authorities say the steps are necessary to address growing security concerns. But residents of the city, which was the scene of bloody clashes between ethnic Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks six months ago, say the measures simply make them nervous.

Kyrgyzstan Approves New Government

Kyrgyzstan has approved a new government, ending more than two months of political uncertainty following parliamentary elections and effectively initiating Central Asia's first parliamentary democracy.

Deputies in the Kyrgyz parliament were confirming the majority coalition formed on December 15 that joins the Respublika Party with the Social Democratic Party and the Ata-Jurt Party. The coalition controls 77 seats in the 120-member legislature.

3,100 conflict-affected people provided with sanitation facilities in south Kyrgyzstan

Over 1,900 families living in Osh and Jalalabat cities lost their home as a result of the June conflict. Following the construction of transitional shelters, ACTED also provided 448 of these affected households with sanitation facilities.
