Concern at high maternal mortality rates in Kyrgyzstan

Healthcare system under scrutiny as increasing numbers of women die in childbirth.

Figures showing a rise in the number of women dying in childbirth have only confirmed the multiple challenges facing maternity provision in Kyrgyzstan, which is short of qualified hospital staff, medical supplies and equipment.

From January to the end of August, the latest period for which national data are available, 58 deaths were recorded among mothers during pregnancy, childbirth and the post-delivery period.

Electricity price shock for Kyrgyz consumers

Government says it has no option but to charge more realistic rates.

Plans for massive hikes in electricity and central heating prices have outraged consumers in Kyrgyzstan, who say they will be hard pressed to pay.

The government, which is struggling to cope with the effects of the world economic crisis, says it is forced to cut subsidies and pass on the real cost of energy. Analysts interviewed by IWPR counter that it would be better to address the systemic inefficiencies that make electricity so costly to produce.

US food assistance program launches its second distribution in Issyk-Kul, Naryn, Jalal-Abad, and Osh Oblasts of Kyrgyzstan

On November 10, 2009, Mrs. Lauren Perlaza, Cultural Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy to the Kyrgyz Republic will open the official launch of the second food distribution in Ak-Olon village, Ton District, Issyk-Kul Oblast of the Kyrgyz Republic. Mr. Memmott will be joined by Mr. Kydykbek Isaev, Governor of Issyk-Kul Oblast, Mr. Suvanaliev Omurbek, Governor of Naryn Oblast, and Ms Catherine Brown, Country Director, Mercy Corps Kyrgyzstan in welcoming program beneficiaries and invited media.

Access to food still difficult for vulnerable Tajik families, reports UN

The 2009 harvest in Tajikistan is exceptionally good, but access to food remains difficult for vulnerable families in the Central Asian nation, according to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

The agency, in its October crop and food security assessment report, noted that the wheat crop is at a record high of 829,000 tonnes, one quarter more than last year, and yields of potatoes and other staple crops have substantially increased this season.

Four suspected IMU members killed In Tajikistan

Tajikistan's Interior Ministry has announced that four suspected members of the banned Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) were killed and one alleged militant arrested in a security operation in a religiously conservative region of northern Tajikistan.

The incident in Isfara, in the restive Ferghana Valley that straddles the nearby borders of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, highlights security concerns over the IMU's activities in the region.

Tajik Interior Ministry spokesman Mahmadullo Asadulloev told RFE/RL on October 19 that one security officer was wounded

A new plan to allocate =A314 million is set to drive economic growth across Central Asia and tackle poverty in the region's poorest areas.

DFID's three-year plan will look at boosting the business climate across the region, strengthening public services and improving the effectiveness of development organisations.

By 2012 the plan aims to turn around the region's finances by:

Kit distribution in Erbil

On August 19th, ACTED distributed kitchengardening and agricultural kits to 49 vulnerable IDP and local families in Makhmur district of Erbil Governorate to support their livelihoods. Kits contained potato tubers for planting, a variety of seeds and an assortment of key tools such as shovels, rakes and hoes. This distribution, supported by OFDA, is the first of a total distribution of 145 kitchengardening kits and 80 agriculture kits that will be distributed in Erbil.
