Kyrgyzstan: Fatal landslide in Budalyk was unexpected, say emergency officials

Report
IRIN
ANKARA, 27 April (IRIN) - Monday's deadly landslide in southern Kyrgyzstan - where at least 33 people lost their lives - caught Kyrgyz emergency officials by surprise, despite a recent landslide risk assessment in the region.
"The Kaynama area [in Budalyk village] was landslide-prone based on the results of the monitoring. However, specialists didn't expect such a quick sliding of the land in the area. A high level of moisture [in the soil] and a series of recurring tremors over the past week resulted in the land mass rushing down," Emil Akmatov, a spokesman

Kyrgyzstan landslide kills five children

BISHKEK, April 19 (AFP) - Five Kyrgyz children were killed in a landslide over the weekend, a spokesman for the Central Asian country's emergencies ministry said Monday.
"They had set out for school but seem to have been buried under the landslide," the ministry's spokesman Emil Akhmatov told AFP.

Fearing a further landslide rescuers decided on Monday to call off their search at the site, around 200 kilometres (125 miles) north of the southern city of Osh, Akhmatov said.

"A new landslide could happen at any second," Akhmatov said.
