Uzbek president fears Islamic rebels could seep into Central Asia

TASHKENT, Dec 27 (AFP) - Uzbek President Islam Karimov raised fears Thursday that pockets of Islamic rebels still in Afghanistan could try to seep into the volatile Central Asian region via neighbouring Tajikistan.

"We have serious concerns and have said this to the Tajik president (Emomali Rakhmonov) today that these bandits could seep into Tajikistan from Afghanistan," Karimov said.

Karimov and Rakhmonov were meeting ahead of a gathering of leaders from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan

WFP Afghanistan update on humanitarian situation No. 31

FOOD DISTRIBUTION: SECURITY CONCERNS
While WFP has the logistical capacity to deliver large quantities of food aid into Afghanistan, the actual dispatch can only take place after the Agency has assured aid workers from our partner non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are on the ground to receive the aid.

WFP is concerned about pockets of insecure areas inside Afghanistan which NGO aid workers have not been able to access for a few weeks:

Badghis: Badghis province is one of Afghanistan's most food insecure areas. Some 300,000 people are

Central Asia: Focus on regional refugee concerns

Report
IRIN
[ This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]
BISHKEK, 29 October (IRIN) - Given the crisis in Afghanistan, refugees are becoming a high-profile issue in Central Asia. The five Central Asian states - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan - only began to encounter the issue of refugees 10 years ago after gaining independence from the former Soviet Union. Since then, internal and regional conflicts have propelled tens of thousands of refugees across the region, initiating a debate on the sociopolitical and legal aspects of the problem.

Fighting poverty and disaster in Central Asia

Report
IFRC
Federation News 23/01
More than 60% of the population lives below the poverty line in Central Asia, and in Kyrgystan and Tajikistan this figure is as high as 90%. From that meeting, identified priorities for action include training more

By Ruth Gidley
LONDON, Oct 19 (AlertNet) - Preparations are under way in Central Asian countries near Afghanistan to receive refugees and distribute food.

Forming partnerships seen as key in future strategy for Central Asia

Report
IFRC
By Ilmira Gafiatullina in Almaty, Kazahkstan
The annual meeting of Central Asian Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies, which has just ended in the Kazakh capital Almaty, has agreed that fostering partnerships within the Movement and outside it, is a "key strategy" for the region. The meeting also heard a plea that the current humanitarian crisis in and around Afghanistan should not overshadow existing acute needs.

In a region where "every single country" is at risk from devastating earthquakes, floods, landslides
