AFGHANISTAN: Labour markets in trouble: WFP
A study of the Afghan labour market and people's purchasing power conducted by the WFP has portrayed a grim picture of the country's war-devastated economy. The study measured purchasing power by calculating how much wheat a worker could buy with a daily wage, and found that purchasing power was down in all major Afghan cities.

Afghanistan's urban poor households relied for between 73 percent to 100 percent of their income on wage labour, according to the WFP study. Yet, in Faizabad, capital of the northern province of

Afghanistan: IRIN Special Report on Rapprochement with the Taliban

Report
IRIN
ISLAMABAD, 27 November (IRIN) - The reality of Afghanistan is often difficult to swallow. A country ravaged by years of war - not to mention drought, poverty and hunger - Afghanistan is effectively ruled by the Taliban Islamic Movement of Afghanistan. That the Taliban controls up to 95 percent of Afghan territory is disputed by few, yet the legitimacy of the Taliban administration in Kabul is recognised by just three states: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Notwithstanding that fact, there is a recent change in attitude towards the Taliban among Afghanistan's Central

AFGHANISTAN: Russia supports broad-based government
Long-accused by the Taliban movement of aiding the Northern Alliance's military struggle against it, Russia on Wednesday announced its support for proposed Afghan peace talks to end two decades of war in the country. "We are for settlement in Afghanistan. We want the two sides to sit down at the table and begin negotiations ... Only a broad-based government in Afghanistan can settle this situation," said Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Eduard Shevchenko at a press conference in Islamabad.

After a brief thaw, new chill hits Tajik-Uzbek relations

Report
EurasiaNet
Marat Mamadshoyev: 10/20/00

The recent insurgency against President Islam Karimov in Uzbekistan has helped introduce a new chill into Tajik-Uzbek relations. Uzbekistan's imposition of a visa regime for Tajik citizens, as well as Tashkent's decision to begin placing land mines along the border with Tajikistan, underscores how the insurgency has aggravated interstate relations.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Tajik-Uzbek relations have frequently been marked by tension. Authorities in Dushanbe have often been irritated with what they perceived

RECENT VIOLENCE IN CENTRAL ASIA: CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES

I. INTRODUCTION

Beginning in early August, a series of violent incidents have brought more attention to the prospects for large scale conflict in Central Asia than at any time since the end of Tajikistan's civil war.1 Taliban forces launched a new offensive in northern Afghanistan, bringing that country's civil war and a potential refugee problem to the border of the ill-prepared Tajikistan. This offensive coincided with a series of low-level incursions into Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan

The ICRC on Tuesday warned of malnutrition and increasingly harsh living conditions as a result of the current drought for rural Afghan communities, particularly in the central province of Ghor. Tajikistan: President under pressure from neighbours

Report
IRIN
ISLAMABAD, 1 September (IRIN) - Uzbek President Islam Karimov this week called on Central Asian countries to coordinate their activities in fighting Islamist militias targeting his country. Calling them "international terrorists", he said Tajikistan should not allow the "common enemy" to take shelter on Tajik soil. Karimov said fugitives from Uzbekistan had undergone training in Afghanistan and eastern Tajikistan, and were now "professional militants and terrorists" who had been attacking Uzbekistan and Krygyzstan, reportedly from bases in Tajikistan.
