Overview

In 2012, the Red Crescent Society of Kyrgyzstan (RCSK) made maximum efforts and undertook many activities to overcome the consequences of the internal crisis that happened in 2011, and also to restore its image among its partners and the population in general. Although the tension lasted for several months, it has finally been resolved. The concrete activities of restoration, undertaken by the RCSK, were the following.

  • the staff of the National Society were re-instated in their jobs, and acceptable work conditions were ensured;

A new bridge and a safer future

Every spring, melting snow causes rivers across Kyrgyzstan to break their banks, flooding crops, orchards and homes. More than 3,000 rivers throughout the country pose a serious risk to people living along their banks.

DIPECHO VII Improving preparedness and response abilities to natural disasters in Central Asia

From the 24th to the 27th of April 2013, the Kyrgyz Ministry of Emergency Situations (MoES) and ACTED (Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development) will conduct a three day cross border visit for the Tajik Committee of Emergency Situations (CoES) to their Republican Search and Rescue Centre (Rosso) in Osh. At the event, MoES will officially open their Canine Search and Rescue Centre, funded through ACTED’s DIPECHO VII.

Monthly Price and Food Security Update Kyrgyz Republic, March 2013

HIGHLIGHTS

  • In March 2013, the retail price of wheat flour did not change on a month-on-month basis and remained at high levels. Since June 2012, the price has increased by 56% in rural and 47% in urban areas, and by an average of 52% across the country.

  • The domestic retail price of wheat flour in March was 42% higher than in the same month of last year and only 4% lower than the peak level of early 2011.
