Overview

In 2012, the Red Crescent Society of Kyrgyzstan (RCSK) made maximum efforts and undertook many activities to overcome the consequences of the internal crisis that happened in 2011, and also to restore its image among its partners and the population in general. Although the tension lasted for several months, it has finally been resolved. The concrete activities of restoration, undertaken by the RCSK, were the following.

  • the staff of the National Society were re-instated in their jobs, and acceptable work conditions were ensured;

A new bridge and a safer future

Every spring, melting snow causes rivers across Kyrgyzstan to break their banks, flooding crops, orchards and homes. More than 3,000 rivers throughout the country pose a serious risk to people living along their banks.

After only two years of implementation of Intensified Capacity Building (ICB) in Hennan Province, the branch has recorded impressive achievements:

• The new structure benefitted 7,000 people through sustainable services

• Grassroots Red Cross organisations have increased from 90 to 3,100

• The number of volunteers increased from 10,000 to 30,000, and staff from 100 to 8,000

Programmes of the Red Crescent Society of the Kyrgyz Republic (RCS KR) are aligned with the strategic aims of the Strategy 2020 to save lives, protect livelihoods, and strengthen recovery from disasters and crises; enable healthy and safe living; and promote social inclusion and culture of non-violence and peace. The capacity-building efforts are in line with the enabling action one to build strong National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

EBRD adopts new country strategy for the Kyrgyz republic

EBRD confirms active support to further market economy reform and ensure recovery

The EBRD’s Board of Directors has approved a new country strategy for the Kyrgyz Republic, which is designed to ensure continued EBRD support for the recovery of the country’s economy and sustainable growth after a period of social and political unrest in the recent past.

In the next three-year period covered by the new strategy, the Bank will continue helping various sectors of the Kyrgyz economy by promoting the private sector and stabilising the business operations in the country.

Supply Annual Report 2010

The year was unprecedented in terms of the scale and complexity of emergencies, notably multiple emergencies in Haiti, including the devastating earthquake which claimed 220,000 lives and left 2.3 million people displaced, and catastrophic flooding in Pakistan which, at its peak, inundated one-fifth of the country.
