As the meteorological department forecast that the torrential rains may extend into next year, reports yesterday indicated that floods have hit the Kano plains after the River Nyando burst its banks.

The floods which affected Kakola, K'ombura and Ombeyi villages in Nyando division of Kisumu District for the past two days rendered hundreds of people homeless.

NAIROBI, Kenya (PANA) - Floods have submerged houses in several parts of Kenya leaving at least 25,000 people homeless, a government official said Friday.

Relief food will have to be airlifted to the affected families by the government, The official, John Lituda, said.

Some of the heaviest rain in three decades has caused serious flooding in parts of Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya during the last two weeks. The floods have caused dozens of deaths, displaced thousands, washed away roads, houses and bridges and damaged crops.

WHAT:     CARE will mobilize 3 million shillings ($50,000 US) from a special CARE Emergency Fund to combat the growing cholera epidemic in western Kenya.  CARE will purchase I.V. fluids, oral rehydration salts and antibiotics, and will partner with the Ministry of Health to send teams of health workers into the countryside to educate Kenyans on cholera prevention measures.
