AMMAN, Dec 24, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX News Network) -- A UN official has revealed that nearly 10,000 displaced Iraqis in Jordan are resettled to third countries in 2008, daily newspaper The Jordan Times reported here Wednesday.

"Although some may say this number is small compared to the overall number of displaced Iraqis, this is a significant increase, " Imran Riza, representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Representative (UNHCR) in Jordan, was quoted as saying.

Udhiyah campaign report for 2008

Afghanistan

In Kabul, Laghman, and Nangahar, 763 families received packages of fresh Udhiyah meat.

Iraq

Over 10,000 pounds of fresh meat was distributed to 2,300 poor Iraqi families, as well as a number of orphans, in the provinces of Baghdad, Anbar, Diyala, and Mosul.

Jordan

Udhiyah meat was distributed to 580 families living in Palestinian refugee camps and isolated rural villages.

Lebanon

In the governorates of Tripoli and Sidon LIFE distributed Udhiyah meat to 130 needy families.

Palestine

Some 7 tons of fresh meat were distributed

Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen,

Let me begin by extending my sincere thanks to you for participating in the second Dialogue on Protection Challenges.

The inaugural Dialogue focused on refugee protection and international migration. There will be a side event tomorrow to look in more detail into its impact, which for UNHCR included the re-examination and additional resourcing of several key operations.

It is my hope that participants will approach this Dialogue, on protracted refugee situations, in the same spirit

OPT/Jordan: Daily snacks tempt children back to school

AMMAN, 9 December 2008 (IRIN) - A nutrition programme run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in camps across Jordan is encouraging more students to stay in school.

Teachers had become accustomed to seeing children ditch classes, under pressure to help parents at home or work to help the family finances.

The midmorning snack provided by UNRWA throughout Jordan since the beginning of the school year has proved successful in tempting students to stay in class, according to teachers and education officials.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Iraq is moving toward transition, but hundreds of thousands of Iraqi families inside and outside Iraq are still struggling with acute poverty, displacement and the continuing effects of conflict.

The 2009 Consolidated Appeal for Iraq and the Region aims to meet their immediate humanitarian needs, contribute to stabilisation and speed recovery. Requesting US$ 547.3 million in total, it brings an unprecedented number of humanitarian organisations together across 12 countries to support Iraqis. The appeal is presented
