GENEVA, May 21, 2013 (AFP) - The UN said Tuesday the number of Syrian refugees flooding into Jordan had suddenly fallen from several thousand a day to close to zero, warning that fighting may be blocking people in need from coming.

"In Jordan in the last four days, we have seen a significant drop in the number of (Syrian) refugees arriving," Panos Moumtzis, who heads the UN refugee agency's response to the Syria crisis, told reporters in Geneva.

Mafraq [ACTED News] – Due to the highly dynamic context in Za’atari refugee camp, in Northern Jordan, which is hosting more than 120,000 refugees, with daily arrival rates ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 people, information on the number of refugees, their social organisation and physical location remains extremely fragmented, hindering the targeted and efficient humanitarian response.

• Assessment was conducted in Raba Sahan on the 14th of May by UNHCR Health staff and IOM in order plan new arrival vaccination and health screening services.

• MoH reports that in health centres and hospitals in and around Ramtha medication supplies that used to be enough for one month are now barely lasting for 8-­‐10 days.

With temperatures set to soar up to 104ºF (40˚C) in the coming weeks, international agency Oxfam has warned that the warmer weather will increase health-related risks for Syrian refugees. The aid agency says the most vulnerable, such as the elderly, women and young children, are already facing serious health risks due to a lack of shelter, water and basic sanitation.

ATHENS, May 18 2013 (IPS) - With no end in sight for the ongoing two-year war in Syria, the ensuing humanitarian crisis continues to escalate, with over 1 million refugees having fled to neighbouring countries and at least another 3 million displaced within Syria.

The number of Syrian civilians who have fled their country to escape conflict has passed the 1.5 million mark, according to an announcement made by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on the 17th of May. The refugee influx continues on a daily basis and is worsening an already precarious situation, on top of particularly difficult weather conditions.

The fact that more than 1.5 million people have registered or have appointments with UNHCR means the actual number is much higher. The increasingly widening gap between the needs and resources available is a growing challenge.
