Iraqi refugees: critical needs remain unmet

Over 1.8 million Iraqi refugees are currently spread throughout the Middle East, with the largest concentrations in Syria and Jordan and sizable populations in Lebanon and Egypt. The governments of these host nations are reluctant to publicly acknowledge a growing refugee crisis and therefore provide Iraqis with no official status and few social services. The international community is similarly in denial over the existence of an Iraqi refugee crisis, and has provided few resources to address the needs of this expanding population. It is essential that host nations,

Executive Summary

Since the start of the 2003 war in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have fled their country, seeking refuge in bordering countries. About one million are split evenly between Jordan and Syria, while Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have barred all Iraqis from entering and few are known to have sought refuge in Iran or Turkey. Countries within the region, as well as the larger international community, have largely ignored the presence and the needs of Iraqi refugees. This report focuses on the status and experience of Iraqis in Jordan not because Jordan has

Canada welcomes 63 Palestinians stranded between Iraq, Jordan

OTTAWA, Nov 1, 2006 (AFP) - Canada will accept a third of some 150 Palestinian refugees stranded in a camp in "no man's land" on the Iraq-Jordan border for three years, a UN Refugee Agency spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Most of the asylum seekers had moved to Iraq after the creation of Israel in 1948, then fled their new home after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003, but were denied entry into Syria and Jordan.

They have been "stuck in no man's land," living in tents in a United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR)

Iraq discusses reconciliation with exiles in Jordan

by Kamal Taha

AMMAN, Oct 30, 2006 (AFP) - An Iraqi government delegation held talks Monday with Iraqi exiles in Jordan amid efforts to involve them in a reconciliation conference in November in violence-battered Iraq.

But at the end of two days of often heated discussions, many exiles insisted that any reconciliation talks must include Iraqi insurgents battling the US-led occupation of their country.

October mission to assess needs of Iraqi refugees fleeing violence

On November 1, Refugees International (RI) is launching a mission to Lebanon, Syria and Jordan -- the three largest host countries for Iraqis -- to examine the conditions Iraqi refugees currently face and assess the ability of these nations to provide an adequate response to an increase in refugees in the near future. Since the governments of these three countries have refused to grant Iraqis official status as refugees, RI will also study the extent that this lack of status limits their access to basic services. This is RI's first mission to assess conditions for

Nowhere to flee: The perilous situation of Palestinians in Iraq

I lived in Baghdad for fifty-eight years. This is the first time I ever left. Leaving Iraq is like tearing my roots from Iraq. All of my children were born there. I brought all of them out-my sixteen children and grandchildren. After my wife's nephew was strangled, we couldn't go out on the street. It was impossible to live there any longer. I left behind my house, all my furniture. I didn't leave behind my car because it was already stolen a year ago. We didn't know where we were going, we just wanted to get out to save ourselves and our children.
