ODPEM to Roll out Landslide Risk Reduction Project

KINGSTON — Project Manager, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Kirk Frankson, has informed that the agency will be rolling out a pilot phase of the Jamaica Landslide Risk Reduction Project in four at-risk communities across the island.

Speaking at a JIS ‘Think Tank’ today (September 23), Mr. Frankson noted that the agency has not yet completed the process of identifying the communities, but pointed out that the selection would be based on very specific guidelines.

Scotts Cove to Belmont Road in Westmoreland to be Rehabilitated

KINGSTON — Road surfacing works along the Scotts Cove to Belmont main road in Westmoreland are to get underway, following Cabinet’s approval of a $279 million contract to undertake the activities.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on August 10, Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz, informed that Asphaltic Concrete Enterprise Limited has been awarded the contract for the concrete road surfacing works on this stretch of roadway.

Carrying winds of more than 50 miles per hour and expected to bring 10 inches of rain to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, Emily brings a significant threat to earthquake-ravaged Haiti, which is also in the throes of a cholera outbreak.

Caribbean Community Resilience to Disaster Risk (CCRDR): Enhancing community resilience to disaster risk in the Caribbean region

Through support from the Canadian Red Cross and the Canadian International Development Agency, the Red Cross Societies in Dominica, Jamaica and Guyana have launched a three year program to enhance community resilience to disaster risk in the Caribbean region. This project will enable people living in vulnerable communities to identify and analyze risks and hazards in their local environment, to adopt behaviours that will make their homes and communities safer and be able to respond to disasters.

KINGSTON — Six local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are to receive some US$5 million in grant funding to carry out micro-enterprise, agricultural and climate change projects under the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Development Grants Program (DGP)

The groups, which were announced at a function held on June 29 at the Knutsford Court Hotel in New Kingston are the Competitiveness Company; Environmental Health Foundation; INMED Partnership for Children; Jamaica Cocoa Farmers Association; and Local Initiative Facility for the Environment.

PORT-AU-PRINCE — Torrential rains lashed Haiti on Tuesday, flooding shanty towns, swamping the squalid camps erected after a 2010 earthquake and killing at least 23 people, officials said.

The worst rains to hit the impoverished country this year -- at the start of the hurricane season -- paralyzed the capital, where most of the deaths took place, according to officials at Haiti's civil protection agency.
