Summary:

150,644 Swiss francs were allocated from the IFRC's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 11 October 2010 to support the Jamaica Red Cross (JRC) in delivering assistance to 500 families (2,500 beneficiaries) affected by Tropical Storm Nicole.

During the last week of September,Tropical Storm Nicole struck Jamaica with heavy rains and winds,leaving behind 13 deaths, 26 injured and 437 people taking refuge in collective centres.

Jamaica: CAN$10,000 raised for victims of Nicole

The Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) in Toronto, Canada, has raised more than CAN$10,000 for victims of Tropical Storm Nicole, which devastated Jamaica in September 2010.

President of the JCA, Ms. Audrey Campbell, presented a cheque for CAN$10,153.87 to Jamaica's Consul General to Toronto, Mr. Seth George Ramocan, at a brief ceremony on December 20. Several days later, the Consul General turned the cheque over to the Executive Director of Food for the Poor Canada, Ms. Samantha Mahfood, whose Jamaican branch will be using the funds to aid the victims.

Jamaica: Be vigilant against cholera - PM

As the country continues to strengthen measures to prevent the transmission of cholera into Jamaica, Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding, is again appealing to Jamaicans to do their part in ensuring that the country remains cholera-free.

"I'm urging Jamaicans to be extra vigilant at this time, and particularly the children, because you know that they play in anything," Prime Minister Golding said during his monthly call in programme 'Jamaica House Live' on Wednesday (November 24).

Situation Report #7 Impacts of Hurricane Tomas on Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica, Bahamas, TCI and Haiti (5:00 p.m. November 6, 2010)

Tomas impacted the CDEMA Participating States of Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Barbados, Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines between October 29 and 31, 2010 and caused significant losses and damage to Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Excessive rainfall and high winds have resulted in damage to the housing stock, agriculture sector, road infrastructure, downed power lines and disruption to the utilities sector.

The areas severely affected in St. Vincent and the Grenadines are Park Hill, Chester Cottage, Sandy Bay and Byera

Hurricane Tomas forecast track

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has lifted the Tropical Storm Warning for Jamaica, as Hurricane Tomas moves further away from the island.

In addition, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has given the all clear for non-essential workers to resume duties today.

The Met Service has advised that Jamaica is now outside of the range of tropical storm force winds associated with the hurricane and, therefore, the threat of such conditions no longer exists.

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING remains in effect for Jamaica as the centre of Tomas starts to move towards the north, closer to the eastern end of the island. This means that tropical storm conditions, including possible sustained wind speeds of 34-63 knots or 63-117 km/h, are expected in 36 hours or less.

Jamaica: PM's Address To Nation On Tropical Storm Tomas Preparations

As you know, we have been placed on Storm Warning as Tropical Storm Tomas nears Jamaica. The Met Office has advised that we should expect to experience storm conditions in sections of the island within the next few hours.

We have been tracking this system for the past week as it strengthened, weakened, strengthened again and made its way across the Caribbean. The Meteorological Service is reporting that Tropical Storm Tomas continues to move westward over the south-central Caribbean Sea and is still expected to strengthen within the next 48 hours.

At 10:00 a.m. the centre of Tropical Storm Tomas was located near Latitude 13.5 degrees North, Longitude 72.6 degrees West, about 630 km (390 miles) southeast of Morant Point, Jamaica or 570 km (355 miles) south of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Jamaica: Rising water in Chigwell, Hanover displaces families

MONTEGO BAY (JIS)

With 150 families being displaced from their homes in Chigwell, Pearces Village and Forrest in Eastern Hanover, since the heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Nicole, flood waters in Chigwell have been rising at a rate of approximately six inches per day.

Approximately 650 individuals are affected, of which four persons have been located in an emergency shelter in Chigwell.
