Responding to migration challenges in the Caribbean

ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA - Government officials from 21 Caribbean countries, along with representatives of regional institutions and international agencies, including CARICOM, UNHCR and UNICEF are gathering next week in Antigua and Barbuda for the annual Caribbean Regional Seminar on migration organized by IOM.

During the three-day event beginning Monday 7 December, participants will discuss cooperation and networking in counter-trafficking efforts, ways to advance regional efforts to protect migrant children, and best practices in responding to other vulnerable

Work starts on strategy for food and nutrition security for the Caribbean

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A wide cross-section of experts will start the process of formulating a food and nutrition security policy for the Caribbean when they meet in Guyana next week.

The meeting will take the form of a workshop and is being coordinated by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN). It takes place 30 November - 1st December 2009.

Call for proposals: Canada Caribbean Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM) Fund

The Canada Caribbean Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM) Fund announces the third call for project proposals. Grants will be made on a competitive basis to support small-scale projects at the community level that deliver measurable results in natural disaster risk reduction and/or in the reduction of the negative impacts of climate change. Projects may range in duration from a few months to two years in maximum duration.

Priority will be given to projects in the $25,000 to $75,000 CDN range. Projects outside this range may be considered

When bad weather comes to Mocho, one of the poorest areas of Jamaica, it brings chaos that can last for years.

In 2004 and 2007 major hurricanes struck this mountainous region, devastating livestock and farms and causing extensive damage to already poor infrastructure and facilities.

A slow and limited response from the government left Mocho's people feeling powerless, and all the more vulnerable to future natural disasters.

Caribbean Red Cross societies step up response to H1N1

Jamaica: Tropical Storm Gustav Recovery Program introduces 3M to Barracks, Portland

Residents of the community of Barracks Portland are now receiving the finishing touches to their roofs, under the Tropical Storm Gustav Recovery Program, sponsored by the Department for International Development (DFID) along with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM). The community is the first to receive product testing from the new 3M

Emergency Roof Repair and the ODPEM is currently in the process of exploring a possible partnership with the company 3M in an effort to assist with the final stage of this Program.
