Jamaica: Dr. Chang hands over homes to Gustav victims

Minister of Water and Housing, Dr. Horace Chang, yesterday (Dec. 15) handed over two of the two-bedroom houses, which have been built for Hurricane Gustav victims, to two families in Kintyre, St. Andrew.

"These are the first of the Gustav houses that have been completed," Dr. Chang explained during the handing over ceremony.

Jamaica: Gustav victims to get housing assistance

The Ministry of Water and Housing and Food for the Poor have collaborated to assist persons whose houses were destroyed by Tropical Storm Gustav in August.

The Ministry is providing the land, while Food for the Poor is providing housing for the victims.

According to information supplied by the Ministry's technical team, the Ministry, in conjunction with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, carried out several assessments on the socio-economic status of the victims in the worst affected parishes, including Kingston and St. Andrew, Portland, St. Thomas, and St. Catherine.

- Tropical Storm Paloma, upgraded to a Hurricane 4 as it made landfall in Cuba, caused modest damage and no loss of life in Grand Cayman and Cuba.

This bulletin is being issued for information only. Hurricane Paloma has become a category one hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale and it is headed towards the Cayman Islands and Cuba.

The Overseas Branch of the British Red Cross in Cayman Islands and the Cuban Red Cross with the support of the International Federation, have determined that external assistance is not required, and is therefore not seeking funding or other assistance from donors at this time.

Caribbean Hurricane Season: OCHA Situation Report No. 25

HIGHLIGHTS

- Tropical Storm Paloma is now a Category 1 hurricane and is heading towards the Cayman Islands and Cuba.

- In Haiti, humanitarian efforts continue in Baie d'Orange, in the South-East commune of Belle Anse, following the identification of a pocket of severe malnutrition on 28-29 October by Oxfam GB and Terre des Hommes. In Grande Anse, five people died because of flooding on 27 and 28 October.

Jamaica: UK community makes donation to Gustav recovery fund

LONDON(JIS): Sunday, October 19, 2008 - Jamaican High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Burchell Whiteman, will hand over a cheque for =A310,000 (more than one million Jamaican dollars) to the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) next week.

This represents the second portion of the more than =A323,000 ($3 million) that to date, has been donated to the Jamaican High Commission's recovery fund that was set up on September 5, in the wake of Tropical Storm Gustav, which severely affected the island on August 29.

Predictions for 2008 show an active hurricane season with a higher number of named storms than average. As of the beginning of September, the season is living up to these forecasts. With three named storms in the Atlantic on September 3rd - Hannah, Ike and Josephine - the Caribbean region needs to remain on a high state of alert and preparedness. HIGHLIGHTS

- World cereal production in 2008 is forecast to increase 4.9 percent to a record 2 232 million tonnes, considerably up from earlier predictions after better than expected results from the major harvests gathered in the past two months.

- Based on the latest production forecast, a significant improvement in the global supply and demand balance for cereals in the 2008/09 season can be expected. Even allowing for a larger increase in utilization than was reported in July, an 8 percent increase in world cereal stocks could be possible.

Australia provides assistance to Caribbean hurricane victims

The Australian Government has contributed $1,000,000 in financial aid for relief efforts in Haiti, Cuba and other Caribbean countries affected by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike and Tropical Storm Hanna.

Australia's grant will be distributed through the offices of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
