There were around 27 000 detections of illegal border crossings on the four main migratory routes into the EU in May. The total number of detections in the first five months of 2017 fell 75% from the same period of last year to 84 000, although the number of migrants arriving in Italy remained above the figures from a year ago.

Libya’s Flow Monitoring component was launched in July 2016 with the objective of monitoring the flow of foreign nationals throughout the Libyan territory.

Chapter one presents DTM’s statistical baseline on the number of foreign nationals at each of Libya’s muhalla (lowest administrative level) and an analysis into the characteristics of the locations where migrants are recorded as transiting or gathering in search of employment.

This compares with 215,997 arrivals across the region through 21 June 2016.

The types of shelter and settlement responses found, employed and created by, and created for, displaced people profoundly affect their experience of displacement. This compares with 214,427 arrivals across the region through 14 June 2016.

Between 1 January and 31 May 2017, 8,312 unaccompanied and separated children arrived in Italy by sea, representing 14% of all sea arrivals in this period. This proportion is comparable to the first five months of 2016, when 16% of those arriving by sea were UASC. UASC numbers, however, have increased compared to last year, when 7,654 UASC arrived in the first five months of the year.
