    L'AQUILA, Italy, April 6 (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake struck a huge swath of central Italy as residents slept on Monday morning, killing more than 50 people and making up to 50,000 homeless.

L'AQUILA, Italy, April 6 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake rocked a large swathe of central Italy on Monday, killing at least 10 people and causing houses, churches and other buildings to collapse, officials said.

Some media said as many as 13 people had been killed in L'Aquila, a city founded in the 13th century about 100 km (60 miles) east of Rome, and surrounding villages.

ROME, April 6 (Reuters) - The death toll in the earthquake that hit central Italy on Monday has risen to 50, Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said.

That would make this the most deadly earthquake to strike the country since 1980, when a quake of magnitude 6.5 killed about 2,735 people in the south of the country.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (April 6, 2009) - The humanitarian organization Operation Blessing International is sending its director of international disaster relief, David Darg, to Italy to assist with relief and recovery operations in response to the deadly earthquake that struck central Italy early Monday.

Darg, who for the last year has led the charity's earthquake response in Sichuan Province, China, will arrive in the Italian quake zone late Tuesday and will assess the damage.

Depuis son centre logistique de Wabern, près de Berne, la Croix-Rouge suisse (CRS) a envoyé 200 tentes destinées aux familles sans-abri vivant dans la région touchée par le séisme en Italie.

Les tentes sont équipées de lits, de couvertures et de chauffages. Elles permettent d'abriter près de 1000 sinistrés au total. A cela s'ajoutent quatre grandes tentes multi-usages, pouvant faire office de dispensaires ou de cuisines communautaires.

Les fonds mobilisés pour cette mission de secours s'élèvent à 300 000 francs.

At 3:30 a.m. a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the city of L'Aquila in central Italy, 120 km northeast of Rome.

According to the Italian Red Cross at least 40 people have been killed, 400 injured and eight remain unaccounted for. The numbers of dead and injured are expected to grow.

The Italian Red Cross is running a total of 4 camps in the areas hit by the earthquake, in Assergi, in San Gregorio, in Collemaggio and in Centicolella. The beds available are about 4000. A fifth camp is used to accommodate ItRC staff active in the disaster zone.

More than 600 volunteers and operators of the Italian Red Cross are working in the areas hit by the earthquake.
