There were more than 14 100 detections of illegal border crossings on the three main migratory routes into the EU in April, 2% higher than the number of detections from the previous month. The total number of detections in the first four months of 2017 fell 84% from the same period of last year to almost 47 000, even though Italy continued to see numbers higher than a year ago.

Reports emerging from the sea rescue effort between Italy and Libya suggest around 20 men, women and children are missing and feared dead after rescuers were able to pluck some 500 survivors from the Mediterranean Sea over the weekend.

Between 1 January and 30 April 2017, 37,235 persons arrived in Italy by sea. This is a 33% increase compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (27,926). As in previous years, monthly arrivals were comparatively lower during the winter, due to less favourable weather and sea conditions. Monthly arrivals increased in the spring: in April 2017, 12,943 refugees and migrants reached Italian shores.

Between 1 January and 30 April 2017, 5,190 unaccompanied and separated children arrived in Italy by sea, representing 14% of all sea arrivals in this period. This proportion is comparable to the first four months of 2016, when 16% of those arriving by sea were UASC. Their numbers, however, have increased compared to last year, when 4,541 UASC arrived in the first four months of the year.

The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) Libya’s Flow Monitoring exercise was launched in July 2016 to capture data on migration flows in the country by conducting daily assessments at Flow Monitoring locations and Flow Monitoring Surveys with migrants.

In 2017, DTM updated its data collection methodology for Flow Monitoring Point assessments to capture more detailed data on migrants at key entry, exit and transit points for migrants in Libya.

ROME, May 14 (Reuters) - Rescuers saved 484 migrants from boats in the Mediterranean on Saturday and found the bodies of seven men who had died in the attempt to get to Europe, Italy's coast guard said.

This issue covers the period 7 May - 13 May 2017 and includes updates on influenza, measles, hepatitis A, cholera, type E botulism, yellow fever and Legionnaires' disease.

Switzerland - IOM, the UN Migration Agency reports that 53,386 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2017 through 10 May, with nearly 85 percent arriving in Italy and the remainder divided between Greece, Cyprus and Spain. This compares with last year’s 187,970 arrivals across the region through 10 May 2016.

IOM Rome said, through 10 May, nearly 8,000 migrants or refugees have arrived in Italy, or nearly 1,000 men, women and children per day, a pace considerably ahead of both May 2015 and 2016. (See chart below).
