Iran: Reconstruction efforts in quake-devastated Bam continue two years on

Iran: Bam earthquake - two years later, the spirit of life is intact

Two years on from the catastrophic earthquake that devastated the city of Bam in the early hours of 26 December 2003, killing more than 26,000 people and injuring tens of thousands of others, the spirit of the city's population remains intact, but only just.

In those 24 months much has been done to improve the lives and livelihoods of the survivors but equally, much more remains to be done. Indeed a walk around a town that was more than 80 percent destroyed still gives the appearance, in places, of a city recovering

Medair closes Iran emergency assistance and reconstruction programme

Hope is once again flourishing in Bam, Iran. Thanks to Medair, homes and livelihoods have been restored just two years after a massive earthquake plunged the region into a state of emergency.

On December 26, 2003, a devastating earthquake hit south-eastern Iran measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale. The quake's epicenter struck near the ancient citadel-city of Bam. From a pre-earthquake population of 142,000, almost 26,000 people lost their lives and an additional 30,000 were injured. The majority of buildings were also destroyed.

Operation Mercy have confirmed with the Red Crescent the need for further urgent relief aid in the Zarand area in Iran where a massive earthquake took place on Feb. 22, 2005 leaving over 10,000 families homeless and hundreds dead.
Most of the earthquake victims are located in mountainous regions of Zarand and Ravar and soon rain and snow will be coming. These families are going through the winter living in tents and probably will continue living like this for the coming year.

Iran: Humanitarian aids to affected people of Qeshm Island

As a follow up of the earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale which recently shook Qeshm Island in Hormozgan province, IRCS relief workers are still in the scene and doing their utmost to respond the need of the affected people. In this respect, IRCS provincial branch of Hormozgan distributed 74,151 tins of tuna fish, 46,700 tins of canned beans, 40,920 kgs of rice, 10,445 kgs of sugar, 16,836 kgs of edible oil, 5,986 kgs of pulses, and 1,133 kgs of tea. Iran: Third quake quivers Qeshm Island

Tehran, Dec 2, IRNA - The third earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale hit suburbs of Qeshm Island in southern Hormuzgan Province at 01:28 hours local time on Friday (2158 GMT) Thursday night.

The seismological base of Tehran University's Geophysics Institute registered the tremor in an area measuring 26.81 degrees in latitude and 56.03 degrees in longitude.

There are no immediate reports of any damage or casualty.

Earlier in the day, the island was rattled by a 4.3-magnitude earthquake, which caused no casualty or damage to property.

Caritas addresses sanitation needs in quake-damaged Qeshm Island, Iran

Vatican City, 2 December 2005 - Caritas Internationalis has launched an appeal for more than US$200,000 to support earthquake-battered communities on Qeshm Island in southern Iran. On 27 November, an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the island (population 123,000), killing at least 10 people, injuring 200, and damaging some 4,000 houses, 2,500 of which were completely destroyed. The villages of Tunban and Gavazin were among the worst hit, while considerable damages were also reported in the villages of Turian, Karevan, Kushe, Ziran, and Tomsenety.

New quake hits Qeshm island, southern Iran

An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale hit surrounding areas of Qeshm in the Persian Gulf in southern Iran on Monday evening following two killer quakes that hit the coastal area and its neighboring villages on Sunday.

Iran's seismological bases registered the tremor at 20:45 local time (17:15 GMT).

There are no reports of damage or casualties caused by this latest tremor.

Strong quake hits southern Iran

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake trembled the southern island of Qeshm in Hormozgan province on Monday afternoon at 13:53 pm local time (10:23 am GMT). The quake has reportedly lasted around 15 seconds and caused people to run out of their houses.

IRCS reports say there has been some damage to 17 villages at the destruction rate of 10% to 80%. Some 7 people have lost their lives and more than 39 are injured in the quake. Qeshm is the biggest island in an area of 1,500 square meters located in Persian Gulf.

Iran's schoolchildren practise for dreaded quakes

TEHRAN, Nov 29 (Reuters) - As soon as the siren rings, the girls dive for cover under their desks.

Schoolchildren went through their annual drills across Iran on Tuesday to prepare for an earthquake, a necessary exercise in a country criss-crossed with lethal faultlines and where tens of thousands of people have been killed in earthquakes.

Iran: Earthquake hits Gheshm Island

Geneva, 28 November, 2005 - A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale has hit southern Iran, killing at least 13 people. The earthquake struck Gheshm Island and the city of Bandar Abbas at 13:53 local time on Sunday morning. Gheshm Island is a tourist destination and home to some 120,000 people.
