1. According to press reports, an agreement on the deployment of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to Afghanistan was initialed today by Afghan Interior Minister Yunus Qanooni and Britain's Major General John McColl. A formal signing ceremony will be held at a later date.
2. While the security conditions on several roads in southern Afghanistan has improved, the situation in and around Kandahar and Jalalabad is still volatile. The movement of armed elements and weaponry, bombing raids and fear of Taliban elements

Afghans returning home despite landmines and massive destruction

KABUL, Dec. 31 (UNHCR) - With security and political stability progressively returning to Afghanistan, tens of thousands of refugees and internally displaced persons are returning to their homes despite landmines and the massive destruction in many areas caused by two decades of war and drought.
In the last two months an estimated 60,000 refugees returned home from Pakistan and Iran, while over 30,000 internally displaced Afghans went back to the capital of Kabul since late November.

At the same time, several hundred civilians continue to leave the country for Pakistan every day.

Iranian aid sent to Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Agencies): Hassan Ghadami, the director of the Red Crescent Search and Rescue Organization, says that Iran has sent 11 consignments consisting of hundreds of tons of humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

He added that the Iranian Red Crescent Society distributes assistance directly to needy Afghans. Ghadami said that one of the Iranian consignments consisted of 150 tons of clothes, foodstuff, and medicine which was sent to Nimrooz Province and its vicinity through Zahedan.

He added that more consignments would be sent to Afghanistan this week.

The number of Afghan refugees returning home rises steadily

KABUL, Dec. 26 (UNHCR) - The number of Afghan refugees returning home from Pakistan and Iran continues to rise steadily.
Following the installation of a new interim administration in Kabul in late December, as many as 5,000 civilians have been crossing the borders daily, according to UNHCR officials.

These are the highest regular returns since conditions changed dramatically in Afghanistan and surrounding countries in the wake of the September 11 attacks in the United States and subsequent military campaign against Afghanistan's Taliban leadership and the Al Qaida network.

UNFPA, Iran discuss cooperation in health services to Afghan refugees

The issue was discussed during a meeting between visiting UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid and Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi, the official IRNA news agency reported.

World Relief works with Iranian churches to help Afghan families

BALTIMORE, December 19, 2001 - World Relief is working with Iranian churches to provide emergency supplies to 3,500 Afghan families in two camps for displaced people. The two camps, Mile 46 Camp and Makeki Camp, are located in western Afghanistan, next to the Iranian border. At least six children died of the cold this past month, just outside Mile 46 Camp.
