Six months on: Support for earthquake victims continues

SIX months have passed since a massive earthquake, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, razed a large area of Khorasan province in eastern Iran on 10 May 1997.
The final death toll was put at more than 1,700, with some 5,000 people injured and thousands more left homeless.

Since the onset of the disaster Iranian Red Crescent staff and volunteers have worked unstintingly to help victims survive in the terrible days following the quake and then to start the slow process of restoring their lives.

46 prisoners of war freed

Forty-six Iraqi prisoners of war were freed by the Iranian authorities and repatriated under the auspices of the ICRC on 26 September. The delegates involved in the operation travelled to the Islamic Republic of Iran and interviewed each of the prisoners in private to make sure that they wished to be repatriated. Accompanied by the ICRC delegates, the prisoners were then taken to the Mundharieh-Khosravi border post where they were handed over to the authorities of the Republic of Iraq.

Iraq protests to UN over Iranian air raids

Iraq has protested to United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan over Iranian air raids on its territory.

Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz says Iran and Turkey are exploiting Western-imposed "no-fly" zones, to launch the raids.

He says the continuation of the no-fly zones constitutes a continuous threat to Iraq's sovereignty and security...and that U-N pledges to maintain Iraq's sovereignty have been ignored.

On Monday, Iranian warplanes raided bases of the Iranian opposition in Iraq.

The Iranian Red Crescent Society is continuing to assist with meeting the food, water, shelter and other relief needs of some 50,000 earthquake victims. Because reconstruction is far from over, it is now assessing the need for further assistance beyond the original four month time scale of the operation and preparing construction projects.

thanks to LWR's collaboration with the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). A shipment of
quilts valued at over $35,000 is on its way to Iran in response to an earthquake which shook the
country in early May. The quake, which measured over 7.1 on the Richter scale, caused over
1,500 deaths and left another 50,000 people homeless. The shipment of almost 4,000 quilts will

1. Further to the situation report no. 7 dated 27 May 1997, DHA held, on 28 May, an information meeting in Geneva to present the Second International Appeal by the United Nations to the donor community.

2. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Martin Griffiths, Deputy to the USG for Humanitarian Affairs and Director of DHA Geneva, and the UNDAC team leader presented the findings of their mission and the contents of the appeal. Representatives from IFRC also provided briefings on their relief efforts.

This week, in response to an urgent need to provide fresh water to the victims of the earthquake in Iran two 18,000-litre trucks were flown from the Federation's operations support unit in Nairobi, Kenya, to Mashhad, in eastern Iran. Iranian Red Crescent Society workers involved in the search and rescue operation have been withdrawn, now that this part of the operation is over, but several hundred are still in the disaster area providing hot meals and preparing emergency food distributions . All the homeless have been housed in tents. Contributions to the Federation's appeal stand at CHF 8.8 million, representing 75% coverage.

UNDP's Emergency Response Division has allocated $200,000 to strengthen coordination of relief efforts and for communications equipment following the earthquake that recently struck Iran.
