UNHCR Tehran reports today that some 15,000 refugees from northern Iraq have arrived in Iran since Saturday in the wake of continued fighting in Iraq. UNHCR staff say there are unconfirmed reports of another 40,000 waiting along the border who could also decide to cross into Iran. We don't have any further information on them.

One thing is certain: the 15,000 new arrivals, plus more than 40,000 others who arrived in Iran during the fighting last month, are in a very precarious situation. They are living in tents,

The latest information received today from the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) confirms that 59,500 Iraqis have crossed into Iran from Northern Iraq following fighting between rival Kurdish groups. To accommodate the influx the National Society has erected five camps in the three provinces of Kurdistan, Kermanshah, and West Azerbaijan.

A still unconfirmed number of displaced people are camped on the Iraqi side of the border and it is not clear if they will remain there, return to their homes or cross the border into Iran.

Islamic law one hazard for Kurdish refugees in Iran

Iranian authorities passed out food and medicine to the several thousand Iraqi Kurds allowed to cross the border yesterday, while refugee women were warned to cover up.

1. THE UN/DHA RESIDENT COORDINATOR IN TEHERAN REPORTS THAT, ACCORDING TO THE DISASTER TASK FORCE OF THE MINISTRY OF INTERIOR, FLASH FLOODS HAVE IMPACTED 153 VILLAGES IN 14 SHAHRISTANS (COUNTIES) IN THE FIRST WEEK OF JULY. AREAS AFFECTED INCLUDE TABRIZ, MIANEH, MARAND, MARAGHEH, DJULFA, BOSTANABAD, SHABESTAR, KALIBAR, MACO, KHOY AND OROMIYCH. FLOODS HAVE LED TO THE DEATH OF 22 PEOPLE, DESTRUCTION OF 400 RESIDENTIAL UNITS AND OF 9,000 HA OF AGRICULTURAL LAND. 3,500 LIVESTOCK HAVE PERISHED. THE TOTAL FINANCIAL DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT RIALS 26 BILLION
