HIGHLIGHTS

  • A 7.8 earthquake hit South-Eastern Iran on 16 April, close to the border with Pakistan. The impact was felt in both countries, with 14 people killed, 73 injured and two missing.

  • New and worsening humanitarian crises since 2011 have led to a considerable increase in CERF allocations to the MENA region. The largest recipients have been Pakistan, Syria and Yemen.

Humanitarian Bulletin Middle East and North Africa, Issue 03, July-August 2012 (EN/AR)

Highlights

  • Funding shortfalls are undermining the ongoing humanitarian response in Pakistan, with aid agencies cutting critical life-saving assistance.

  • Needs in Syria increased to an estimated 2.5 million people and the number of refugees has doubled since July. Whilst humanitarian agencies have scaled up, these efforts are being undermined by funding shortfalls.

  • The government of Iran led the humanitarian response to two earthquakes that left 300 dead, 2600 njured and over 150,000 affected.

Islamic Republic of Iran Earthquake Situation Report No. 3 (EN/AR)

I. HIGHLIGHTS

• The Government of Iran is in the process of providing relief assistance to the people affected by the earthquakes of 11 August. It has declared its intention to start the recovery period very soon;

• The UN Resident Coordinator and her accompanying team visited the earthquake affected areas on Friday 17 August 2012;

• The UN Disaster Management Team held a meeting on Saturday 18 August to ascertain priorities for providing support to the Government.

Islamic Republic of Iran Earthquake Situation Report No. 1 (EN/AR)

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

• Two earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.4 and 6.3 on the Richter scale hit the East Azerbaijan province at 12:23 UTC (16:53 local time) and 12:34 UTC (17:04 local time);

• The disaster has left 300 dead and approximately 2000 injured. An estimated 17,000 are in need of assistance;
