In 2011, the internal armed conflict opposing national and international forces to Armed Opposition Groups has further escalated. The epicentre of the fighting, which used to be in the south and east of the country, has now also spread to most Afghan provinces, particularly to the North. This is the thirty-fourth year of conflict in Afghanistan.

Brussels, 29 June 2011 – A new JRS report reveals that asylum seekers in Ukraine are left with access to basic services and adequate asylum procedures. The report, No Other Option, features testimonies from asylum seekers and examines bilateral relations between the EU and Ukraine, and their negative impact on refugee protection in the country. The report was launched at a press briefing yesterday in Brussels.

On December 22, the new government was sworn in after the parliament, the Council of Representatives (COR), approved a power-sharing agreement reached by all of the country's major political blocs on November 11, approximately nine months after the March 7 elections.

The constitution mandates the primacy of Ba'ath Party leaders in state institutions and society. President Asad and party leaders dominate all three branches of government.

Iran: Scores of quake victims in mountainous areas caught under debris
