UN envoy welcomes relocation of first group of Iranian exiles to Albania

16 May 2013 – The top United Nations official in Iraq today called the relocation of 14 Iranians to Albania from an exile camp near Baghdad, an “encouraging first step.”

“The residents’ arrival in Albania late last night is an encouraging first step in the relocation of the group of 210 residents the Albanian government has agreed to receive,” said the UN Special Representative for the Secretary-General and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), Martin Kobler.

Strong Iran quake causes damage, injuries

TEHRAN, Iran, May 11, 2013 (AFP) - A strong earthquake of 6.2 magnitude hit southern Iran early on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, with local media reporting of damaged villages and at least 20 people injured.

The epicentre of the quake was measured at 85 kilometres (52 miles) southeast of the southern town of Minab, located in the Hormuzgan province, at 0208 GMT , the USGS said. It was at a depth of 36.44 km (22.64 miles).

SITUATION: On April 16, at least six people in Pakistan and 40 people in Iran were killed when a major earthquake, with a 7.8 magnitude, struck a region near the Iran-Pakistan border. Tremors were also felt in India and the Gulf states.

The epicenter was in southeast Iran in an area of scarcely-populated mountains and desert. It was located 125 miles southeast of the Iranian city of Zahedan and 155 miles northwest of Turbat in Pakistan.

Two severe earthquakes with a magnitude of 6 and 6.2 struck the northwest of Iran on August 11th, 2012. According to official figures published by the Red Crescent, 399 villages were affected by the quakes. About 12.000 houses were completely reduced to rubble. 1.800 injured persons had to be treated in hospitals, 12.000 people were given outpatient treatment.

Islamic Relief responds to Balochistan earthquake

Following the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that hit southeast Iran, near the Pakistan border on Tuesday 16 April, Islamic Relief has dispatched aid and assessors to the affected region of Balochistan, Pakistan.

At least 35 people lost their lives in the earthquake and over 180 people were injured.

After an immediate assessment of the damage, Islamic Relief dispatched 375 family-sized tents and 500 kits that provide a family with essential household and kitchen items, such as pots and pans, cutlery, blankets and mattresses.

Iran reports one killed, dozens hurt in 7.7 magnitude quake

TEHRAN, April 17, 2013 (AFP) - A huge earthquake that struck Iran's rural southeast region killed one woman and injured more than two dozen other people, media reports Wednesday cited officials as saying.

"A woman was killed by a mountain landslide following the quake," Alireza Shahraki, governor of Khash city, was quoted by ISNA news agency as saying.

'Thousands' of Pakistanis affected by Iran quake

Mashkail, Pakistan, April 17, 2013 (AFP) - Thousands of Pakistanis have been affected by a huge earthquake in Iran that damaged hundreds of homes and killed at least 41 people, sparking a military rescue effort in the remote region.

The United States also offered aid after the 7.8-magnitude quake, Iran's most powerful in five decades, damaged an estimated 2,000 mud-built homes of Mashkail, a town in the poor Pakistani province of Baluchistan.

Iran ups aid effort after deadly quake near nuclear plant

TEHRAN, April 10, 2013 (AFP) - Iran stepped up relief efforts on Wednesday for survivors of a powerful earthquake that killed 37 people and damaged dozens of villages but left its sole nuclear power station unscathed.

More than 90 villages in the southern province of Bushehr were hit hard by Tuesday's quake, with two completely destroyed, the head of Iran's Red Crescent rescue corps, Mahmoud Mozafar, told state television.

More than 850 people were injured and some 800 houses razed to the ground.

A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck south-west Iran, 89km (55 miles) from the port city of Bushehr on Tuesday, 9 April. The exact death toll is not yet clear but regional authorities say at least 30 people have been killed and as many as 800 injured.

Some 10,000 people are thought to live in the affected area in more than 50 villages, two of which have reportedly been completely destroyed. Bushehr's governor says 700 houses have been damaged and 200 families affected. Many houses in rural parts of the province are made of mud brick, which can easily crumble in a quake.

There were no mega-disasters in 2012 in terms of human impact.

The largest disaster of 2012 in terms of mortality was Typhoon Bopha in the Philippines that resulted in 1,901 deaths. It was the strongest tropical cyclone on record to hit the southern Philippine island of Mindanao and affected over 6 million persons.
