Since the beginning of 2011, the number of the registered returnees with the Ministry of Displacement and Migraon (MoDM) increased dramacally compared to the previous years. Hormozgan earthquake OCHA Flash Update no. 1, 11 May 2013

  1. A 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in Hormozgan Province in Southern Iran at 06:38 local time on Saturday 11 May. The earthquake location was close to the port town of Bandar-e Jask, some 85 kilometers to the south of Minab and 270 kilometers to the southeast of the provincial capital, Bandar Abbas. Nineteen aftershocks were reported, some reaching a magnitude of 5.6.

  2. According to the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), one person (a 13 month-old child) was killed and 20 others were injured.

Voluntary Return to Afghanistan

1 – 30 April 2013: In April 2013, a total of 5,445 Afghan refugees voluntarily repatriated to Afghanistan. Of this, 4,211 came from Pakistan, 1,229 from Iran, and 5 from India.

1 January – 30 April 2013: During the first four months of 2013, a total of 10,710 Afghan refugees (averaging 89/day) voluntarily repatriated to Afghanistan. The rate of return so far this year is similar to total returns (11,687) during the same period in 2012.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A 7.8 earthquake hit South-Eastern Iran on 16 April, close to the border with Pakistan. The impact was felt in both countries, with 14 people killed, 73 injured and two missing.

  • New and worsening humanitarian crises since 2011 have led to a considerable increase in CERF allocations to the MENA region. The largest recipients have been Pakistan, Syria and Yemen.

Desert Locust Bulletin No. 415 (April 2013)

The Desert Locust situation remained serious during April in northern Sudan where hopper bands were present near crops along a 1,000 km strech of the Nile River. Swarms could form in May and threaten crops, and a second generation of breeding could take place before the summer or, if early rains fall, adults could move to the summer breeding areas in Sudan. There is also concern in Saudi Arabia where new generation adults could move from the northwest Penninsula, including Yemen, and breed in areas of recent heavy rains.

Baluchestan earthquake OCHA Flash Update no. 2, 18 April 2013

  1. An earthquake registering 7.8 on the Richter scale occurred in Sistan and Baluchestan Province in southeastern in Iran on 16 April 2013 at 10:44:13 UTC (03:44:13 PM at epicentre). The epicentre was located between the cities of Khash (86 Km to the northwest) and Saravan (85 Km to the southeast) and the border with Pakistan (78 Km to the east). Nine aftershocks have been recorded so far with the strongest measuring 5.6.

Pakistan: Earthquake Information Bulletin n° 1

An earthquake measuring 7.8 magnitude on Richter scale was experienced at 15:44 hours (Pakistan local time) on 16 April 2013 in southern Iran with a depth of 76 km . The epicentre was 83 km east of the Iranian city of Khash, and 250km northwest of Turbat in Balochistan, Pakistan. The tremors were felt across Pakistan, and as far as the Gulf States and New Delhi, India.

Baluchestan earthquake OCHA Flash Update no. 1, 16 April 2013

Iran

An earthquake registering 7.8 on the Richter scale occurred in Sistan and Baluchestan Province in South-eastern in Iran, near the city of Khash (86 Km), 78 Km from the border with Pakistan, on 16 April 2013 at 10:44:13 UTC (03:44:13 PM at epicentre).

There are so far no official reports on the impact but various media outlets have reported up to 40 deaths (according to Iran State TV).

The Deputy Head of Iran's Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has declared the state of emergency in the quake-hit region of the Province.

Bushehr Earthquake OCHA Flash Update no. 2, 10 April 2013

  1. The Iranian Red Crescent Society has announced the rescue operation is officially terminated.

  2. The death toll is 35 persons (8 children), with some 800 people injured, of whom 80 have been hospitalized in Khormoj city hospital.

  3. The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) is responding with 40 search and rescue teams (10 from Kerman Province, 5 from Isfahan, 10 from Fars, 5 from Kohkilouyeh, and 10 from Hormozgan) and 4 assessment teams. All emergency teams have now returned to their areas of origin.
