In 1997, 123 States signed the first-ever treaty banning the development, production, stockpiling, transfer and use of a weapon that was already in widespread use: anti-personnel landmines. Fifteen years later, their use and production has been curbed dramatically, while data on clearance, stockpile destruction and casualty rates show undeniable progress towards eliminating the problem. However, much still needs to be achieved, as Claude Tardif, Hhead of the ICRC’s physical rehabilitation programme, explains.

Niger is the worst place on the planet to be a mum, new research published today by Save the Children has found.

The West African country, one of the world’s poorest, has replaced Afghanistan at the bottom of the children’s charity’s annual State of the World’s Mothers ranking.

Organized crime deepens humanitarian crises, warns UNODC

UNODC Executive Director Antonio Maria Costa has called for concerted efforts to "break the vicious circle between insecurity and underdevelopment". Addressing the Security Council today during a debate on global threats against international peace and security, Mr. Costa said, "Instability attracts crime, and crime deepens instability. Trends in staple food prices in selected vulnerable countries- Issue No 5, Oct 2009

This bulletin provides information on price changes for the most commonly consumed staples and the potential impacts of these changes on the cost of the food basket. Staples contribute 40 - 80% of energy intake for the most vulnerable population groups in developing countries. Therefore, even a small increase in staple food prices has a high impact on overall food consumption, especially when the food basket is composed of very few staples.

The bulletin covers 60 countries over the period July to September 2009 .
