Fourteen die, millions left homeless by floods in east India

BHUBANESHWAR, India, Sept 1 (AFP) - Fourteen people have died and more than three million made homeless in the eastern Indian state of Orissa due to a worsening flood situation, state officials said Monday.

Half of the state's 30 districts have been hit by the rising waters and state authorities have pressed into service the army and navy for rescue and relief operations, they added.

Naval commandoes have also been deployed in some of the worst-hit areas, but the authorities were yet to carry out airdropping of food and other relief materials in areas where people were

Two depressions over the Bay of Bengal within a fortnight have resulted in continuous heavy rainfall for more than a week in the state of Orissa and adjoining areas of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and North Chatisgarh. 10 killed in floods in east India

BHUBANESWAR, India, Aug 31 (AFP) - The death toll from flooding in the east Indian state of Orissa Sunday rose to 10 as the situation worsened and more areas were inundated by swollen rivers, officials said.

Officials said over 50,000 people have been evacuated since flooding began three days ago, triggered by unusually heavy rains.

Close to three million people have been affected all over the state, they said.

Of the state's 30 districts, 15 have been affected with the coastal districts of Puri, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur and Cuttack the most badly hit.

Two and a half years after the Gujarat earthquake, Prakash Mehta, President of one of the government-run shelters is not a happy man.

Rain in the upper catchment areas of Nepal has resulted in the rise of the water levels of Bagmati, Kosi and Gandak and has so far affected 17 districts of Bihar.
