NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2012

After an intense year of natural disasters in 2011, countries in the Asia-Pacific region welcomed a reduction in the number of events in 2012. OCHA and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters recorded 93 natural disaster events in 2012, in which over 3,200 people were killed and more than 75 million people were affected. China and the Philippines experienced the most disasters in 2012.

NEW DELHI: The entire swath of north India, extending from Rajasthan to Bihar, experienced its worst winter temperatures in decades on Monday as at least 14 people died of cold in UP alone, pushing the death toll this season to around 100.

Intense cold wave sweeps N. India

NEW DELHI, Dec 31 (KUNA) -- As many as 69 persons have died in Uttar Pradesh state alone due to an intense cold wave that swept across most of north-Indian states like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, it was reported here Monday.

According to a Press Trust of India (PTI) report, people, particularly the poor, could be seen sitting around bonfires in order to fight the Delhi's chill. Meteorological department has predicted intense cold and foggy conditions for the next few days.

Maharashtra drought situation alarming, says Pawar

MUMBAI: Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on Friday described the drought situation in Maharashtra as "alarming" and called for urgent steps to overcome water shortage in the state.

A central team has recommended an assistance of Rs 778 crore to Maharashtra government for setting up fodder and cattle camps and the state government would get the amount in a week, the NCP leader said.

"This year's drought is very serious. Serious enough to make one lose his sleep," Pawar said after inaugurating the renovated office of his party's state unit here.

Cold snap toll reaches 40

NEW DELHI: The death toll from cold snap in north India has mounted to at least 40 with the maximum deaths due to it — 13 — reported from Uttar Pradesh since Wednesday.

Police said three people died in Barabanki, while two each in Bijnore, Sultanpur and Chandauli. One death was reported from Gazipur, Baghpat, Banda and Sonebhadra.

Refugees in India share daily struggles with UNHCR chief

NEW DELHI, India, December 21 (UNHCR) – Urban refugees in the Indian capital told UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres of their daily challenges during a two-day visit in which he discussed concrete steps for strengthening UNHCR's partnership with the government.

Guterres visited a refugee centre in New Delhi on Thursday and met eight exiles from Afghanistan, Myanmar and Somalia. They told him about the financial difficulties they face, and the challenge finding places to stay.
