ISLAMABAD, 17 December (IRIN) - The stunningly rapid developments in war-torn Afghanistan since 11 September have strongly impacted on its eastern neighbour, Pakistan, ending its isolation from the West and raising hopes for an economic recovery. However, analysts and aid workers also say what has happened has brought more refugees into the country, now hosting more than two million Afghans, and more drugs.

India: Using mobile medical units in emergency responses

13 December 2001 (HPN) - HelpAge India's Mobile Medicare Units (MMUs) were used after the Gujarat earthquake in January 2001 to provide immediate emergency care in rural communities. The role of these units is normally to increase access to primary healthcare for older people who are not mobile, or who do not live near a healthcare centre. However, an assessment of the emergency response in Gujarat suggests that MMUs can play an effective role in emergency relief. These findings will feed into further disaster-preparedness work being planned by HelpAge

Germany to provide 664 million German marks in development aid to India

New Delhi (dpa) - Germany has committed a development aid of 664 million Deutsche Marks (301.8 million dollars) to India,the German Embassy in New Delhi announced on Wednesday.

The Embassy said in a press release that this was agreed at the first negotiations since 1997 on development cooperation between the two countries held in Bonn from November 27 to 29.

The release said the amount would be utilized for rehabilitation of hydropower station, financing of private investments, infrastructure, reconstruction programme in earthquake-hit

On 15 October 2001, a deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal about 300 Km east of Chennai, intensified further into a cyclonic storm which crossed the coastline near Nellore on the morning of 16 October, causing heavy rain and winds of 65-75 km/h in southern coastal Andhra Pradesh. The Northeast monsoon set in on the same day and further exacerbated the situation causing heavy rainfall in South Andhra and Rayalaseema regions of Andhra State.

Natural disasters, war and economic downturn impact MCC funding

AKRON, Pa. - Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) recently cut back on several international programs because of a funding shortfall, and more reductions may follow if current giving trends continue.
The combination of major disasters, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and war in Afghanistan have put stress on MCC funding. The current economic downturn has also resulted in a shortfall of donations in United States.

MCC in Canada is not reporting a decrease in donations so far this fiscal year, which began Sept. 1. However,

India was just beginning to recover from the devastation of January's powerful earthquake in Gujarat, when heavy rains in July brought destruction to Orissa. Together, these two disasters took more than 30,000 lives and left hundreds of thousands homeless and vulnerable to diseases such as malaria and diarrhea. It takes time for a country to recover from destruction like this. Homes must be rebuilt. Food must be replaced.
