1. The UN Resident Coordinator in New Dehli informs that, as per official estimates, 156 people have been killed in the State of Bihar due to monsoon rains during the last two and a half months. The overall position of the loss incurred during the current monsoon season is indicated below. The situation in almost all the states is now back to normal.

During the last week, several parts of the western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat received heavy rainfall. Due to torrential rains in these states, several people from the low-lying areas were evacuated. The situation has improved considerably since 26 August and flood water has started receding.

1. According to the latest official reports, 111 people have been killed by floods. Some 200,000 houses have been damaged. The extent of loss of crops and cattle is being assessed.

$10,000 Grant Supports India Earthquake Survivors

New York, June 3, 1997 -- An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale
shook central India on the morning of May 22, resulting in at least 40 deaths and
over 400 injuries. Thousands of people were rendered homeless and evacuated to
relief camps.


An LWR partner in India, Churches for Social Action (CASA), immediately sent
relief items into the area. Together with other relief agencies there, CASA staff
assessed the quake's damage and have applied for an emergency grant of $93,000

At least 40 persons have been killed and over 400 injured when a major earthquake rocked central Madhya Pradesh at 0421 (local time) on the morning of 22 May. The earthquake had its epicentre at Amanpur, 25 km south-east of Jabalpur and it measured 6.0 on the Richter scale. Jabalpur district was the worst affected and most of the casualties have taken place there. Thousands of people have been rendered homeless and were evacuated to relief camps.

JABALPUR, India (Reuter) - Rescue teams Friday rushed food and medicine to some 4,000 people whose homes were razed in a powerful earthquake that killed dozens of people in central India and injured more than 1,000.

A devastating 6.0 earthquake which rocked the city of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, central India, may not have seriously affected a World Vision Area Development Project, but World Vision officials have not been able to confirm this since all communications lines are down.

World Vision India's Jabalpur ADP (IND-11-100151) is located in the area. The ADP is funded by World Vision Hong Kong.

SITUATION: At least 38 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in an earthquake Thursday that struck the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Many of the victims died as they slept, their houses collapsing on them.

The earthquake, which measured 6.0 on the Richter scale, was centered in the village of Kosamghat, some 460 miles southeast of New Delhi, the Indian capital. A mild earthquake that hit New Delhi Friday and measured 2.5 on the Richter scale apparently caused no injuries or damage.

Atlanta, May 23, 1997 -- CARE's Country Director in India, Tom Alcedo, reports that 50 people are confirmed dead in the earthquake that struck Madhya Pradesh yesterday. The toll is expected to rise.

Jabalpur, Seoni and Mandla Districts -- 450 miles southeast of new Delhi -- were struck hardest by the quake leaving 4,000 people homeless and 1,000 people injured. The quake, which registered 6.0 on the Richter Scale, damaged CARE's recently-opened office in Jabalpur city.

A major 6.0 magnitude earthquake stuck the Madhya Pradesh state of India, with initial media reports indicating 49 deaths and thousands injured.

The earthquake struck at 4:22 a.m. on Friday, 22 May. The epicenter was located near the city of Jabalpur, and affected more than 1.5 million people living within a 350 kilometer radius.

World Vision India sponsors a major Area Development Program in the area, but it was too earlier to know how the project beneficiaries may have been affected.
