Following heavy rains the Mahanadi and other rivers in the Orissa state of India have wreaked havoc submerging around 4,000 villages spread over 19 districts and leaving 80 dead as the state government is speeding up the relief and rescue operations for 2.2 million affected people. Around 80,720 hectors of cultivated land is totally submerged. Food stocks, possessions and livelihoods have been destroyed. Around 160,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas and moved to 275 relief camps.

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on Richter scale, neighbouring states on 18 th September 2011. The quake, with its epicentre at Mangan, 54 kms from Gangtok on the Sikkim-Nepal border, was experienced even in Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal, with limited damage in these regions as well. Since then many aftershocks have been experienced, causing increasing panic among the surviving population.

On 6 August 2010 the town of Leh in Ladakh, in northeastern Jammu & Kashmir state, experienced an extremely heavy cloudburst which lasted several hours. This in turn triggered raging floods and landslides.
Hundreds of homes were destroyed and people marooned. More than 200 mud-built houses were washed away. The district hospital was submerged and the radio station damaged. Electricity cables and telecommunication pylons were damaged or destroyed.

On 13th April 2010 at approximately 11 pm Indian local time, a severe storm struck parts of Bangladesh and Eastern India. The storm lasted for about 90 minutes, with the most intense portion spanning 30-40 minutes. The severe storm killed 134 people in India. 90 people died in the Indian state of Bihar, 40 in West Bengal state, and 4 in Assam state.
