RAINFALL/FLOOD SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY

Rainfall occurred at few places over Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and north coastal Andhra Pradesh and at one or two places over Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Odisha and rest Andhra Pradesh. Weather remained mainly dry over rest parts of the country. The chief amounts of rainfall (1 cm or more) recorded at 1730hrs of 05.06.13 were : Gangtok-11, Tadong-9, Dhar and Siliguri-8 each, Long Island and Churk-7 each, Jalpaiguri-5, Pune and Indore-4 each and Shillong and Nancowry-3 each.

Current Situation:

Due to extreme high temperature and heat waves across India, 7 people were reported death in Gurgaon, Haryana State and 524 people were reported death from Andhra Pradesh due to heat related illness and heat stroke since 1st week of April.

Emergency Situation due to Heavy Snowfall in Leh, Ladakh - Situation Report 1

Due to heavy snowfall in the eastern part of Leh district Livestock like sheep/goat, yak, cow, mules and ponies started dying from sheer starvation and hypothermia. The only vegetation grows in the region is shrubs and bushes (no trees and fodders) and pasture land is covered under a thick blanket of snowfall which won’t melt due to cold. The region is also known for endangered species like wild ass and birds. Changthang region is poorer than the rest and only very few of these people are employed in Jobs.

Highlights

  • On the morning of 16 May, cyclonic storm Mahasen made landfall in Patuakhali district in southern Bangladesh moved forward to the northeast away from Myanmar, weakened and dissipated on 17 May.

  • Relevant storm tracking sites stopped tracking the weather system once it moved over northern Bangladesh early on 17 May.

  • 7 deaths were reported by the Government of Sri Lanka.

  • The Government of Bangladesh reported 14 deaths, 65 injured persons.

Cyclone Mahasen 2013: Information Bulletin 1

Situation

On 16 May, Cyclone Mahasen made landfall in Patuakhali District of Southern Bangladesh causing widespread destruction and leaving 13 people dead. Of the ten coastal districts hit, the three districts of Patuakhali, Bhola and Barguna were the worst affected. The Government of Bangladesh has reported approximately 49,000 houses have been completely destroyed and 45,000 houses partially destroyed. Over 1.2 million people have been affected and 1.1 million people were evacuated.

Wheat and rice prices mostly fall around the region

Strong production generally kept domestic prices around the region stable or drove them slightly down for wheat, wheat flour and rice, except in India and Myanmar where government procurement programmes pushed prices higher. Overall, however, prices were mostly higher than at the same time last year, according to FAO’s Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS).

Strong biosecurity measures needed to contain bird flu Implementing strong biosecurity measures coupled with good hygiene are required to contain the spread of the H7N9 strain of avian influenza virus, Hiroyuki Konuma, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific told a press conference in Bangkok on April 11. The virus had infected 82 people and killed 17 in China by April 19.
