This year, the shock is particularly worrying since it comes after a harsh winter and a significant increase of the food prices all over Asia. The cumulative effect of this situation has a direct bearing on most of the households which rely on agriculture and livestock for their income and food needs.

Tropical storm Gustav, which has already killed at least 70 people in Jamaica and Haiti, is now heading for the Gulf of Mexico and the US state of Louisiana.

Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Centre believe that the warm Gulf waters could increase the storm's power, and that Gustav could become hurricane of level 4 or 5 in the coming 72 hours.

The American Red Cross is ready to offer help and support to the populations that are in the storm's expected path, and have moved hundreds of mobile feeding trucks into Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Caritas teams are assessing damage caused in Haiti after Tropical Storm Gustav swept over the country.

Caritas disaster mitigation advisors are working with the Haitian Government, while logistics teams are on the ground and are ready for action once the rains decrease.

Flooding in some regions of the country has caused extensive damage to housing, infrastructure and agriculture, and up to 25,000 people are without drinking water.

The most affected areas is Cité Soleil where 4000 people are in shelters.
