Highlights
Latest information confirms a sharp drop in global cereal production in 2002, to 1 833 million tonnes. As a result of this, and a marginal rise expected in total cereal utilization in 2002/03, world cereal stocks for crop years ending in 2003 are forecast to plunge sharply, by 110 million tonnes from their opening level, to 466 million tonnes.

The number of countries facing severe food emergencies worldwide stands at 39. Serious food shortages have emerged in eastern Africa, and the food situation remains critical in southern Africa.

Food was stolen from WFP delivery trucks, clearly marked with UN/WFP flags, at roadblocks resulting from armed groups confrontations in the provinces of Choco and Antioquia.

WFP Bogota office continues in high alert for security reasons.

c) Implementation:

WFP is currently delivering 178.5 MT of food for FFW and Community Kitchen projects.

a) Significant Events:

On the weekend of 30 November, a national vaccination campaign was set forth. WFP and other United Nations agencies participated in the campaign.

b) Security:

In the northern part of the country, roadblocks and clashes between armed groups continue affecting food deliveries, especially in Antioquia where PRRO beneficiaries have been forced to leave their farms. In the provinces of Choco, Antioquia and Cordoba, illegal groups forced WFP supply trucks to pay tolls to transport commodities.

OVERVIEW

As of November 2002, the number of countries facing serious food difficulties throughout the world stands at 39, with 25 in Africa, 6 in Asia, 6 in Latin America and 2 in Europe.

In southern Africa, the difficult food supply situation, as a result of two poor harvests in a row, continues to tighten with dwindling food stocks and slow imports. The food situation is particularly critical in Zimbabwe where serious food shortages are affecting half of the population. Food assistance to the neediest is inadequate and

a) Significant Events:

Heavy rains caused the loss of pulses, corn and vegetables harvests in the province of Antioquia and landslides have affected a number of provinces.

Clashes between armed groups, on the road to the province of San Carlos, have blocked the deliveries of food to WFP school and preschool projects. The supplier was unable to deliver 7,300 rations to 260 beneficiaries.

Cited as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti is plagued with overpopulation, poverty, crime, and pollution. With more than one third of its 8.3 million people living in the capital city, the housing situation and sanitation services are extremely overburdened. Availability of affordable health care services is difficult for many Haitians especially those living in rural areas where it is estimated that 40% have no access to primary health care services.

Haiti: World Concern aid slowly ships out

LYNNWOOD, Wash. -- Humanitarian aid shipments resume tomorrow at World Concern's supply distribution warehouse in Lynnwood, Wash. They had been delayed by the Pacific Maritime Association lockout, forcing families, schools and medical clinics in developing countries to wait for needed clothing, blankets, medical supplies and schoolbooks.
"The latest information from our freight forwarder indicates that our Nicaragua container is due to sail October 15 out of Long Beach, California," said Merrilou Burris, administrative manager of World Concern Supply Service.

1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 15:00 GMT today, Hurricane Lili struck western Cuba. Lili was located near latitude 21.8 north, longitude 83.7 west, or about 35 km east-southeast of Cabo Frances in western Cuba. This position is also about 185 km southwest of Havana, Cuba. Hurricane threat in Haiti diminishes

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Tropical Storm Lili has slowed down to a Tropical Wave, greatly diminishing the threat of turning into a hurricane and thrashing the south coast of Haiti.
While the possibility of Tropical Storm Lili gathering force remains, the greatest concern is now whether vulnerable areas in the southern part of the country will experience heavy rainfall and subsequent damage to housing.
