Guatemala
As a consequence of the drought and other factors that are affecting Guatemala, UNICEF is presently conducting a nutritional assessment in 102 of the poorest districts of the country. Preliminary information reveal a worrying situation that tends to worsen: 16% of children under 5 years of age in the Chiquimula, Jutiapa and Zacapa are suffering from acute malnutrition, ranging from 3 to 28 %.

According to these preliminary estimates, up to 100,000 children under 5 may be in risk of dying due to malnutrition.

BRUSSELS, 16 May -- A group of more than 200 mayors from throughout the world formally committed themselves today to the fight against poverty in their cities and expressed their determination to actively promote city-to-city cooperation, at the Third United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries, being held in Brussels.

Highlights

The first forecast for world cereal output in 2001 is 1 889 million tonnes, almost 2 percent above 2000. Output of wheat is forecast at 585 million tonnes, unchanged from last year's crop, while that of coarse grains is seen to rise by almost 4 percent to 905 million tonnes. Production of rice (milled basis) is tentatively forecast to remain unchanged at 399 million tonnes.

At the forecast level, cereal output in 2001 would be insufficient to meet global utilization in the 2001/02 season, leading to a further reduction in world cereal stocks. In the

Rome, 1 March 2001 -- Some 60 million people in 33 countries are facing food emergencies of varying intensity, according to a .

FAO's Foodcrops and Shortages found sub-Saharan Africa worst off with 16 countries suffering from exceptional food emergencies caused mostly by natural disasters and civil strife. Despite improved weather conditions recently, the report says, the effects of the drought in Eastern Africa are still being felt in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Sudan and Tanzania, where emergency food assistance continues to be provided
