The context
Plans of action are being implemented in all five of the Caribbean countries (Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Eastern Caribbean islands of Antigua and St. Kitts) where the International Federation is supporting the National Societies relief operations in response to Hurricane Georges. In order to provide support to the National Societies of the affected countries, the International Federation launched an Appeal on 2 October for CHF 10,221,000 to assist 272,500 beneficiaries for six months, including the rehabilitation of 14,500 homes. Hurricane Georges: European Commission clears humanitarian aid worth ECU 2.8 million

Brussels, 30 November 1998 - The European Commission has cleared humanitarian aid worth ECU 2.8 million for victims of Hurricane Georges in the Caribbean. The aid, managed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO), will enable non-governmental organisations to carry out a programme of emergency aid over the next six months. Hurricane Georges: IMF Approves Emergency Assistance for Haiti

November 30, 1998 - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) today approved Haiti's request for emergency financial assistance related to natural disasters. The assistance, equivalent to SDR 15.2 million (about US$21 million), will support the government's economic recovery program and associated relief and rehabilitation efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Georges.

United States issues new hurricane aid to Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Nov 22 (AFP) - US First Lady Hillary Clinton wrapped up her Central American Caribbean tour here Sunday with offers of new US hurricane relief and humanitarian aid to Haiti.

"The people of Haiti are strong people and we will help you rebuild your homes and plant your crops because we want to help you build a better life for yourselves, your children and your grandchildren," Clinton told a group of Haitians repairing an irrigation system.

The 2.1 million dollars in new aid pushed the total US relief for Hurricane Georges to 14.1 million dollars.

Hurricane Georges thwarts hopes of economic recovery in much of the Caribbean

In only four days, hurricane "Georges" swept away any chances of economic recovery in several of the small island states of the Caribbean, ravaged last year by the weather phenonemon El Niño. Drought induced by El Niño greatly reduced 1997-98 crop yields throughout the region, and any hopes for a recovery this year have been thwarted by Georges' brief but devastating rampage, according to a recently released FAO report.

OVERVIEW

Between 20 and 25 of September, hurricane "Georges" swept across the Caribbean, bringing torrential rain, widespread flooding and sustained high-force winds. The hurricane left extensive damage to housing and infrastructure in all the island states. Thousands are homeless and without potable water. Update on Hurricane Georges impact on Cuba , Haiti and Dominican Republic

Hurricane Georges left a trail of damage in some of the Leeward Islands as it passed over the islands of the Northeastern Caribbean on September 20 - 21, 1998. Georges sustained maximum winds of 115 mph with higher gusts of up 150 mph. The hurricane adversely affected two CDERA Participating States while only causing minor damages in some others. The affected Participating States are now in the recovery/rehabilitation process.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI - Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) staff and volunteers are supplying relief support following Hurricane Georges wreckage to the northern coast of Haiti on Tuesday evening, September 22. At least 370 people lost their lives and several hundred thousand are homeless after Hurricane Georges hit Antigua, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, St. Kitts and other Caribbean nations last week. Cuban Government requests international assistance

CUBA

1. On 26 August 1998, the Cuban Government, through OCHA, requested international assistance following an unusually severe drought. One month later, Hurricane Georges hit Cuba, aggravating the situation of those in need in the eastern provinces (the most affected by the drought emergency) and displacing thousands more across the country.
