Having the Right Tools at the Right Time to Meet Food Assistance Needs

Imagine there is a major crisis unfolding. While one region in the affected country is in crisis, there are available food supplies and resources in another. In situations like this, USAID disaster response professionals have several key decisions to make — all with the goal of helping as many people as possible in the most rapid, efficient and effective way possible. Does it make sense to bring in food from the United States? Should we purchase food locally to distribute to those in need? Should we provide people the means to buy the food themselves?

ShelterBox continues to assist displaced families in Haiti

ShelterBox and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have been working together in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake to help return displaced families to their communities, successfully closing down 28 camps.

In the aftermath of the quake that severely damaged the already impoverished Haiti, ShelterBox was quick to respond and help thousands of affected people. Through its partnership with IOM, the disaster relief charity helped affected families by distributing ShelterBoxes which include tents, water filters, kitchen sets and other lifesaving equipment.

Improving the quality of cash transfer programmes supported by the WFP in Haiti, March-August 2013

The World Food Programme (WFP) has been running Cash for Work programmes to tackle food insecurity in Haiti following the drought of spring 2012 and cyclones Isaac and Sandy. The main objective is to improve the food and economic security of the rural communities which have been affected by this series of shocks. The WFP is hoping to improve the quality of its operations by strengthening its monitoring and evaluation system. Groupe URD will be providing it with support in this endeavour via evaluations and training.

New Details Emerge on Elimination Plan as Cholera Continues to Spread

On May 31 the World Bank, PAHO and UNICEF announced $28.1 million in new funding for cholera elimination efforts in Haiti. The new funding was announced following a meeting in Washington, D.C. of the Regional Coalition to Eliminate Cholera Transmission in Hispaniola. In February 2013, a $2.2 billion, 10-year cholera elimination plan was announced by the Government of Haiti, with the support of the coalition. The plan calls for $443.7 million over the first two years. Thus far, however, there have been few details of how the plan will be funded and coordinated.
