Aid Worker Security Report 2011 - Spotlight on security for national aid workers: Issues and perspectives

Key findings

  • The past two years show a downturn in violence against aid workers that spiked in a small number of conflict contexts beginning in 2006 and peaking in 2008.

  • The recent decline in attacks is mainly due to the shrinking presence of international aid agencies in the most violent settings, Somalia in particular, rather than improving security conditions.

  • The incidence of aid worker kidnappings continues to rise dramatically, and the use of major explosives has emerged as a tactic of violence in a small number of settings.

Survey: Haiti's news media 1 year after the earthquake - Rebuilding the Haitian media

Media freedom still far from being assured

On January 31st, Reporters Without Borders published a survey on the situation of media and the assessment of media freedom in the country, since last year's earthquake. Half of Port-au-Prince's radio stations (25 out of a total of about 50) were able to resume broadcasting within a month of the earthquake, thanks above all to help from Radio France. Virtually all of the capital's radio and TV stations are now working again, but many of them are handicapped by the same lack of resources from which they already suffered before the earthquake.

Amid these challenges, there are signs of hope and progress. Thousands have returned to their homes. Hundreds of thousands of children, the future of the country, have returned to school. Several new hospitals are under construction, and a recently concluded agreement has paved the way for a new industrial park that is expected

A) Introduction

The role of humanitarian organizations when working with camp committees: Findings of assessments from three camps in Haiti

Camp committees often play a key role in the management of camps, and in Haiti, frequently act as the primary interface between humanitarian agencies and the wider camp population. Significant decision making power is often allocated to these committees, related, for example, to the type and distribution of aid, selection of beneficiaries, and assistance for more vulnerable groups. However, the roles and responsibilities of the committees and the expected code of conduct are often undefined, and unknown to the wider camp population. The structure, function, effectiveness
