Prime Minister Kosor: EC has granted Croatia's request for aid for natural disasters

ZAGREB, Dec 23 (Hina) - Croatia has received a favourable response from the European Commission to its request for aid in removing the consequences of natural disasters and stands to receive 3.8 million euros for that purpose, Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

"The position of the European Commission is that we may receive over 3.8 million euros, but we're also awaiting the position of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU," Kosor said.

In 2008, UNHCR launched a special initiative on protracted refugee situations, aiming to reinvigorate the search for solutions in countries where refugees had been living in exile for many years. The High Commissioner selected five such situations for immediate and special attention, of which one was that in Serbia and Croatia.

SARAJEVO/TIRANA, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Heavy rain in the Balkans has killed three people, forced the evacuation of around 20,000 from inundated areas and caused more than 340 million euros ($450.8 million) in damage, officials said on Monday.

Three family members were killed when a landslide hit their house in the northeastern Bosnian town of Tuzla on Sunday. A total of 4,000 people have been evacuated in Bosnia so far.

Red Cross responds to Europe's extreme weather

Red Cross societies across Europe are working flat out to combat the effects of the current severe weather. Floods, snow and temperatures as low as minus 33 have cost dozens of lives, wreaked havoc on transport and made many thousands of people vulnerable.

The worst of the weather has been in the Balkans, where floods have hit Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia. Red Cross teams are visiting the worst-affected places and the Federation's Europe Zone office is helping national societies with their response.

Germany Continues to Financially Support Mine Action in Croatia with 200.000 EUR for Demining in ?ista Mala

On 25 November 2010, at 13,00 hrs, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the German embassy in Zagreb between the Federal Republic of Germany and the International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victim Assistance (ITF). The signing ceremony was attended by the Director of CROMAC, Mr. Zdravko Modru=B9an.

Assessing Human Security in the Western Balkans

The West Balkan region consists of Albania and the former states of Yugoslavia (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia/ FYROM, Montenegro, Serbia, and Kosovo). South-east European Surplus Arms: State Policies and Practices

RASR Initiative Issue Brief No. 1

With the decline in tensions in South-east Europe, and with the transition to NATO weaponry, many states are left with stockpiles of surplus small arms and ammunition.

Recognizing the need to manage these stockpiles, countries in the region have sought to participate in collaborative programmes with other states. The United States has supported a Regional Approach to Stockpile Reduction (RASR) Initiative to assist nine countries in South-east Europe to better manage their stockpiles, including through destruction where appropriate.
