Croatia: Analysis of average engagement of deminers in humanitarian demining operations

By monitoring the engagement of deminer capacities on a daily i.e. weekly basis, there has been a great difference observed between the number of engaged deminers and the total number of accredited deminers. The average number of deminers engaged on a weekly basis comes to 288,24 deminers and the analysis revealed the reasons for engagement of 40% less deminers than the total number of accredited ones.

LONDON (AlertNet) - In regions emerging from conflict the painstaking task of identifying missing people is vital for reconciliation and stability, the Balkan delegation chief for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said.

The ICRC's Paul-Henri Arni added that Iraq and other countries rebuilding after conflict could learn from the lengthy process of finding thousands who went missing during wars in the former Yugoslavia.

Croatia: New mine search and demining operations

On October 16, 2009, the Croatian Mine Action Centre will introduce the company Terrafirma Ltd. from Zagreb to mine search and demining operations as per project ''Border zone with the Republic of Hungary on the area of Malo Kneževo in Popovac municipality'' in Osijek-Baranja County. Project layout area is 195.762 square meters and the operations are financed by state budget funds in the amount of 1.394.191,47 HRK. The ultimate deadline for the completion of operations is January 31, 2010.

Croatia: Continuation of demining in Dar?anske šume

Demining operations on the project ''Forest fire lines and sections 42, 43 and 44 in G.J. Dar?anske šume'' in Osijek-Baranja County have successfully been realized and the operations on the additional project will be continued at the beginning of November. During the execution of the above-mentioned operations on the project totalling 976.517 square meters, the company Nitro Ltd. from ?akovec found and destroyed the total of 3.207 mines. 2.088 anti-tank and 1.119 antipersonnel mines have been removed on this project financed by funds of the Croatian Forests in the amount of 7.587.537,25 HRK.

With millions of lives around the world being devastated by ongoing conflicts, the Red Cross believes inspiring the next generation of active humanitarian citizens is a job that should be taken seriously.
